Michael has posted nothing about such a product, so it must be just a rumour (half joking).

I think I saw a few comments there about a supposed "EOS-300D", which I think makes this yet another version of the long-running "digital Rebel" speculation.

With possible new Canon D-SLRs and at least one new Nikon D series camera assured for this year, Photokina will be very interesting this year. Ditto for PMA early next.

Interesting. I wonder though how much demand exists for such a camera. Just lowering the price of the 1D when it's replacement arrives seems an easier and cheaper way to go. On the other hand, Canon is always the one innovating, so I guess getting all those new functions in a new model is important too.

In reply to speculations about the desirability of such a thing, there does seem to be a big gap in Canon's price/quality range between the 10D and the 1Ds, which the 1D does not fill except for those whose usage fits its high speed/less pixels trade-off. Something at around $3000-$4000 with a somewhat more professional grade body than the 10D and at least as many pixels might find a niche. Improved viewfinder coverage and magnification for example?

Nikon and Olympus seem to be working on variants of that "middle ground" too.

On the other hand, I am still not persuaded by the "digital Rebel" stories: there is probably only about $100, less than 10% of total price, to be saved by cutting down the non-digital parts of the 10D. Instead Canon can probably respond to low end competition like the Pentax *ist D by getting the 10D price down low enough that anyone wanting to pay signifcantly less will probably opt for a high end compact digicam (with better wide angle options!) instead.

I've been hearing rumors about Canon introducing a new DSLR in September. Does anyone know anything about this or is it just that, a rumor?

Photokina is every two years. The next one is in September, 2004.

The next likely show for new product introductions is Photo-East Expo in New York, in late October.
