Title: B+W Filter for Hasselblad?
Post by: Juanito on July 06, 2009, 11:18:09 am
I need to buy a protective filters for my 50mm H series lenses and my Aptus 22 back. In the UV haze filters, there's several options and I can't figure out the difference. Can someone help me out? Here's my choices on the B&H website:

B+W 77mm UV Haze 010 Glass Filter - $49
77mm UV Haze 010 Glass Filter Extra Wide (95mm Front) - $94
77mm UV Haze 010 (MRC) Multi-Resistant Coating Glass Filter (Extra Wide) - $139
77mm UV Haze 010 (MRC) Multi-Resistant Coating F-Pro Glass Filter - $94

I'd like to pay the least amount without sacrificing optical quality. Are the coatings for scratch resistance or for optical performance? What's the "extra wide" feature?

Thanks,

John

Slim means there is no thread on the front of the filter. So you cannot put your lens cap or another filter on top of it. They usually have their own caps but those fall off.
MRC filters reduce lens flare. It's not right to put non MRC filter on a good lens.

But it's better not to use any UV or protection filters at all unless you are shooting in a very harsh environment and expect damage to the lens.

Does Burning Man count?

both, according to B+W  ...

What's the "extra wide" feature?
extra wide means the front thread of the filter is larger.  in this case 95mm.
the other option for wide angle lenses is a "slim" filter, which has no front thread.
though given the cropped sensor, i doubt vignetting will be an issue with a regular 77mm filter.
(just decide on MRC or not)

Right. I was thinking about slim...
