The compression in raw files is lossless. The reason while the files are different sizes is that some subject are more amenable to compression than others. Also higher ISO introduces more noise, which increases file size.

Howver, all these images are the same number of pixels 3072 x 2048.

There is also an embedded JPG, which varies according to the settings in the camera and the subject matter. The JPG can be different pixel dimensions.

You can't select the raw file size (its always the maximum).  You can select the size of the imbedded jpeg.

I notice that you can save a range of raw files sizes with the 10D.

What is this about?  The files range from 3-8Mb.  I assume there is compression occurring--does this degrade image quality, similar to jpeg compression?

Can I select the raw file size or is it generated automatically in the camera?  If I can select, which is best?
