Hello everyone,
I've searched for info but didn't get anything concrete.
we're looking to purchase new LCD monitors, up to now it's been the standard issue Apple cinema display.
These monitors will be used in general production, photoshop and capture stations.
Apple is only offering the old 30 and the new glossy 24"
is anyone using one of these new 24's with success?
how about NEC/Lacie or Dell?? (EIZO is out of our budget)
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

EIZO is out of our budget
To bad! Eizo are unbelievably good. 5 Year warranty, incredibly accurate and precise, durable build quality, and greatly reduced issues compared to cheaper monitors when it comes to producing accurate smooth gradients, and shadow detail, and dark saturated colors.
Since many will not budget for a 30" Eizo the setup I recommend the most for budget use is small Eizos on one or two stations out of the view of clients for use in color-critical retouching and reproduction and then large cheap monitors for things like capture stations where you want a bright/large monitor to impress clients.

Hey Doug,
I'm actually considering a 30" Eizo. Do you think they have a new one coming that will match the contrast range of the new 24"? Isn't it like 1100:1 versus 850 : 1 or so on the older ones?

if not displays that supply hardware calibration the displays should meet the following requirements:
- VA (MVA, PVA, S-PVA) or IS-Panel (no TN panel)
- adjustment of luminance
- adjustment RGB chanels
- 10bit LUT or higher (Dell's are 8bit)
- as possible gamma correction as well
- matt display (no glossy panel)

what are you up to with this high contrast? comfortable contrast to work with is around 400:1... and this is still a much higher contrast than any print can reproduce. Too, all the calibration devices have problems to measure dark tonalvalues accurate.
So there are three reasons to reduce contrast by boosting the blacklevel (e.g. to 0.3cd/qm black): contrast more similar to print, you don't get tired when working hours at the display (high contrast is stressful for the eyes) and you get a more accurate calibration curve.
(and when switching to video 800:1 is still heavy)

5 Year warranty
yes, but they reduced the warranty for the luminance level to max. 120cd/qm for 3 years for the wide gamut monitors.
But of course they are very good.

Hi,
Also look at the Lacie monitors.
It's no EIZO but it's also no EIZO money.

has anyone had any experience with the Lacie 324: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5421...screen_LCD.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/542187-REG/LaCie_130781_324_24_Widescreen_LCD.html)
I'd like to go the NEC route but the issues its currently having with the mac osx is a turn off

I use the 324 and I like the monitor very much.
I did a review on it on my blog at www.doorhof.nl/blog under reviews.

I'm going over to check out your review.
Thank you everyone for your answers.
I would love to hear what people are using and if they are happy with their choice.

i just did a calibration tonight - had my eizo for almost 5 years now. I calibrate within every month. Each calibration is virtually identical to the previous - amazing consistency.
