Checkers and chess are good examples.  Chess players play to win.  The best checker players never play to win - they always play for a draw, and wait for their opponent to make a mistake.  OTOH, if you're Minnesota Fats, none of this applies - you bait the opponent on his vanity, and when he crawls far enough out on the limb, you saw it off.
