Title: Nikon D700 Which software for tethering?

I have bought a D700 in the past few days and I am wondering what the options are available for tethering. I see Nikon offers Camera Control Pro 2 which is not included with the purchase (only a trial version). If I am spending extra dollars to tether I'd like to see what other options there are.

I have used, and demonstrated the Camera Control Pro 2 for both the Nikon D700 and D3. It is excellent software. You have a live preview and a lead-in to editing. Without question, for Nikon it is the best there is.

I'm also using the D700 with Camera Control Pro 2, who is really exciting. This program is excellent, as those for MFDBs.

I don't know if your camera has an HDMI output like the D3 has.

If it does - try this first

But you also need a screen with a hdmi input .

Now your screen on the camera will turn black and the information will be on the computer screen at about 1280x 1024 pixel.

it works well and faster than Camera comtrol pro.  But it is also limited.

Thanks for the recommendations Gary and pdf.  And Kers, it does have the HDMI output, so I will have a look at that option too.

Thanks for this idea Kers. I had previously tried an external monitor with the video-out port on a Nikon SLRn, hooked up to a VariZoom monitor (model VZ-702M, used on video cameras) but found that the image on the VariZoom was not much better than the one on the back of the camera.  

Do you have any ideas of what monitor would be suitable for the HDMI output for location work (ie battery operated)?

Not tried it myself, but there's also NKRemote from BreezeBrowser (http://www.breezesys.com/NKRemote/index.htm).

Thanks for the suggestion John, but a no goer for me as I'm on Mac. I have ordered Camera Control 2, but I am also interested the idea of having a small monitor to use instead of towing a laptop around for when I need larger previews on location.
