I'm looking at buying some lenses for my Canon 40D. I like to shoot landscapes (go figure) and was wondering what lenses youguys would would recommend. I would like all my gear to be Canon. Since the 40D is not a FF camera I get the "telephoto effect", are there lenses that reduce that? Anyways I'd like to know what youguys recommend.

there are great reviews on this site (LL) and Dp Review. Another one I use alot is http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/). You'll probably hear a lot of "it depends on your budget and your needs" when it comes to lenses. And IMHO, it does.
Read lots, then choose, that's my advice =)

You have two choices: use lenses for full-frame cameras (EF lenses), which can then be used on any Canon camera, or use EF-S lenses that are optimized for the smaller sensor size of the 40-D.
For the longer focal lengths, I've chosen to use full-frame lenses like the 70-200. That takes advantage of the sensor size (the "telephoto effect" as you call it).
For normal lenses, either zoom or fixed, there are fewer options. I have a 17-35 and a 16-35 zoom, but they are not really wide enough nor long enough for a standard zoom (they are approximately 28-55mm equivalent.) My 24-70 is too long (38-112mm) for a normal zoom. So I ended up buying the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens, optimized for this camera. Great lens, equivalent to a 28-90 or so. It's fast, sharp, and the IS is terrific. I wish my 24-70 had IS.
Wide angles are the toughest. Really, I think the only option is the Canon 10-22mm, which is an EF-S lens with an equivalent 16-35mm field of view. It gets good reviews, though I don't own one. There are lenses from other manufacturers that also get decent reviews.

What is your budget?
Canon EF-S 10-22
Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS
Canon EF 70-200 f4 IS
If you need more reach get the 100-400 IS. If you need more light get the 70-200 f2.8 IS.

the EF 50mm 1.8 mkII is a nifty lens. for $130 you can't go too wrong. it ha a bit of CA and sharpness issues wide open in the corners (many reviewers will point this out) but altogether a really sweet lens for the price point.

Well guys thank you for all the info. Now I just have to figure out if I want to go with the FF lenses or the EF-S lenses. My budget is'nt really small, if I were'nt a noob I would get a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III or a 5D Mark II. Thank you for all the help.

In that case, get the 10-22, 17-55, and 70-200 and be done with it. A 50 mm would also be a good idea, and since you have the money, just get the f1.4.
Don't forget the vertical grip - very nice thing to have.

I think 10-22 would help you get rid of the photo effect but it's sad you want to stick with canon because the sigma 10-20 is really great it has a 10 year warranty, it's cheaper and if you look around the web you'll see that it's at least as good as the canon and maybe a little better. A 50mm fix would also be great.
