Title: Saw strange "light seal" add-on on back adapter, why?

Some digital back adapters on Ebay show strange "light seal" or something around the inner opening. It's not shown in manufacturer's manual.
Why people add that? Is that a sign of light leak? is that a sign of focusing problem? since it surely adds space between the digital back and the camera.
