Hi,
I am designing a catalog however the photos have a background, for
example the pictures are of shoes but i can see the table the shoe is
sitting on and the background behind the shoe, is there a way to cut
the shoes out in Photoshop so the background is removed?

You have several options
you can use the pen tool, and draw around, create a path, and invert it, then delete the back ground, or fill it with whatever color you will
the extract tool in photoshop
and there are a variety of third party plug-in programs that can do the same if not better, such as knockout, fluid mask just to name a few

The easiest way is to silo the image using Fluid Mask. I've used it for catalog photo production for three years now. Generally, very easy and accurate. I always create a layer copy, use fluid mask, discard the background layer, then save as a CMYK PSD file, NOT a TIFF. This is because programs like InDesign hold the transparent layer of the PSD, but for whatever reason do not hold it as a TIFF.
