which polarizer do i need for the AFI? does the camera use a beam splitter?

Regarding the beam splitter, if you are referring to the mirror serving as a splitter, both the AF sensor and the light meter cells are placed behind it, which is why it is recommended to use circular filters and not linear ones.

Circular filters do not affect the light or AF metering.
