Title: 200 Corrupt 40D Raw Files - Any Fix?

Hi All,


just back from a trip and attempting to load up some files into a time lapse sequence.

I have 200 Raw files that are not opening in PS, Lightroom or Preview.

The files have the correct extensions and are the same size as all the others...

The CF card has been used since so re-downloading or using a card recovery program is not an option.

Can anyone recommend a 'fix' for this problem. Is there some software that can help?

Hey Murray,

Have you tried resetting the cache for bridge by holding down option while starting it up. Its a long shot but its saved me a few times.

If you don't find anything else, get a Win98 computer (or install a bootable Win98 partition) and copy the files to a Win98 folder.  It's very unlikely you'll have a problem in that step.  Next, get a binary viewer or some such thing and check the file headers.  The viewer I make that's stored on some Internet sites is View.exe.  Usually when relevant software fails to read a file, the contents are corrupt, particularly in the header which gives loading info for the software.

This file is not corrupt; it simply does not resemble an image file at all.

Looks like it had been automatically encoded on the hard disk, but there are too many consecutive, repetitive strings.

If you upload another one, I try to find out if they exhibit similarities.

Does this hard disk working otherwise? (Writing and verifying the content.)

Thanks Gabor,

The files were written to a raided (dual mirrored) hard disk unit in the field from a new 32gig card via  a laptop.

this looks even worse. For example the first 70 characters are:

IFJFKEKGLFKGLHLHLGKHKGKFJGJGLGIFIFJFJGIGJFJFKFKFIGJGJGIFKFIFIFJFJFJEIF

Normally it is something like

II* ►   CR☻ ♦æ  ☼  ☺♥ ☺   É•  ☺☺♥ ☺   ◘♣  ☻☺♥ ♥   ╩   ♥☺♥ ☺   ♠   ☼☺☻

I don't think it would be useful to go into details, but the file does not resemble anything like a TIFF (the CR2 files are TIFFs). It does not look like compressed either (I don't mean the original raw image data compression but a file compression carried out by the disk driver or firmware).

I have no experience with RAIDs. My unfounded guess is, that the data has never been written on the disk, but I suggest you to seek for advice from those, who know about RAIDs.
