those shooting flat art copy of paintings and other 2D art, are color targets/separtion charts still needed these days or is that for just 4x5 film since the film will interpret the colors much differently?

You don't need to include a target in with the shot, but you'll probably want to shoot a separate shot of a test target. I shoot a ColorCheckerSG chart at each session and then create a custom profile via inCamera. That seems to get me really close on my Epson 9600, but then there's a bunch of tweaks to get to my artist proof. That's a lot of proof, tweak, proof, tweak, proof tweak, but I haven't found an easier way.

yes i find it nice to have the charts, one is a grey scale, the other is the CMYK separations. i use the greyscale for color balance.
