Title: spraying canvas
Post by: Bill Cooper on June 28, 2008, 06:51:47 pm
I am new to printing on canvas. When you spray canvas to seal the image, should  you also spray the backside of the canvas? I get a lot of curling when I spray just the image side. Thanks

I only spray the image side.  I haven't seen any curling.

I am using Lexjet Sunset glossy Canvas or Breathing Color Chromo White.
Currently spraying with Clearstar II, HVLP sprayer.

Thanks Paul. I was using a Wagner HVLP Control Spray for the first time and it sprays too much stuff on the image. The volume control does not work very well.Maybe I need a more expensive spray gun the Wagner cost $69.  Prior to the HVLP sprayer I used PremierArt aerosol spray cans, but along with the aerosol mist the cans splattered large drops of liquid on the image, leaving spots.

When using a non-solvent coat on canvas, have you seen a difference between spraying and brushing?
Thanks

I'm a woodworker and a sometimes photographer. In the woodworking side of things they say "what you do to the wood one one side dot the same to the oher side. When spraying most anything dip a stick onto your mix that you are spraying and you should get one drop per second off the end of the stick.Thinner is better, for HVLP's.More thin coats than one big thick coat also.
I have never sprayed canvas, before.I'll bet if your fast enough you could brush it.Just don't go over it more than 1-2 times.Do it while it's cool out.

Try the clear star sprays.  Call the company and they will tell you the specifications for a power sprayer.
