I just got asked to quote on my first advertising job for a large London agency. I have been learning my craft in Estonia where the rates are worse than awful and probably a fraction of what they are in the civilized world, so I don't know how to price myself in London. Can anyone help?
(Sorry for the off-topic post but this is the only forum I go to where there are some pro photographers from the UK. I assume NY and LA prices would be similar to London prices so that might be interesting to know too.)

Hi Graham,
Is your question how to price, or what price? I was thinking www.the-aop.org would be most useful. They have info on how to price (ie the method for working it out), but you may not need this, rather just the general info on working rates, in which case I can't help.
I'll just shut up now :-)

Bare in mind you may need increased public liability insurance etc.

Yes, it's the general working rates I need. I already know how to price a job on another country's rates.

Large London agency? DING DING DING
I think the question is how much do you think you can
A. Get away with
&
B. Will get you the job after they have put their mark up on.

So far I still don't have the slightest idea what they would normally pay.
Are sites like www.alamy.com reliable for calculating the license fees? According to that site, 3 consumer magazine inserts, full page, 500,000 print run, costs £ 1330. But I would be producing 5 ads like this, and the usage is probably more than that, but doesn't £ 6650 just for the license seem excessive?
Then I tried Getty Images. The price for one image, UK, 1 year, general advertising use, is £5,500. Wow, multiply that by 5 and you get £27,500.
These prices are so far apart that I am still feeling confused. Surely there is an industry-accepted calculation out there?

Graham, check your PM's.
I've sent you my price list for London to have a look at.

Graham,
Can't give london specific advertising rates but...
I am sure you know this already but the main difference is when buyers get work from a stock library, however good it is, it is not produced solely for them whereas commissioned work is created to their specifications and hence commissioning a photographer should always mean the client paying more than getting a stock photo..even if the usage is the same...the individuality of the work is what the client should be paying the extra for.
But the stock model licence can work in your favour as you know that for the same usage you can charge at least that and more as you know that is what they would have to pay for mere stock...and I say mere reservedly as I sell through stock as well as comissioned work!
That said, you can't really say 'whatever ££ is excessive for just the license' as in the end that is what you are charging for..the use of the work, hence on occasions we can charge much more for less time spent if the usage demands it.
As well as individual responses and PM with their fees the aop and even nuj websites ( [a href=\"http://media.gn.apc.org/feesguide/photo.html]http://media.gn.apc.org/feesguide/photo.html[/url] ) can give a good idea of where to start for uk pricing.

Thanks, Marc. I already sent the quote today. Just waiting to hear, but I will certainly be doing more work in London so the more I learn about this, the better.
