While taking some photos of a relations kids, one of the lads accidentally wacked the lower LCD screen on the rear of my new 1Ds:

Does anybody have any idea of how much this will cost to replace? And, is it a job a butter fingers like myself could do?

Have you called Canon to get an estimate? Try the direct number for Elstree 0208 731 4100. It saves having to go through a ton of menus and clueless call centre people ;-)
Also get the parents to check their household insurance for liability cover (there are some odd things in some policies) Since you're in the UK rather than US I'll assume the option of suing them for the cost is less of an option ;-) :-)

I'm not sure if this will you but in the US you can probably purchase the parts for less than $25, provided only the rear cover is damaged and provided you have a friend that can pruchase them for you.
I damaged the main LCD cover on my MK2 and the estimate repair price was something like $300 - in Switzerland. I purchased a rear cover for $10 and 10 double-sided tapes. The service guy told me that they run a test to check for the repair and that was the cause of the high price… I still don't know if it's true.

Andy, my condolences . I woiuld make sure to cover it somehow, even with transparent tape, to prevent moisture, dust, etc. from getting in.

I've had a quote to repair it - £30
The kid in question is a smashing little kid (literally in this case ) and meant no harm. It also happened when we were at a funeral, so there were larger matters at hand which were more important than a broken screen.

He offered to be a monk for his grandmothers funeral (hence the shaving off of all his hair) - how could you begin to get mad?!
My reason for posting - this was shot at ISO 3,200 giving a somewhat reasonable indication of the Ds 3's low light capability (apologies for such a small file...).

If the 1ds III is like the II, all that is broken is the plastic cover over the LCD. If the LCD itself was broken, you would see some of the LCD material bleeding out or pooling.
My old 1ds had a similar issue due to my fault and Canon charge me around 200.00 U.S. It was still under warranty. Repair bill stated replaced LCD cover. Cost me a total of 260.00 as the shipping to Canon with insurance was 60.00.
Sorry to see you new camera damaged, but shouldn't be too expensive.
