Title: Mamiya AFD II
Post by: Bill Caulfeild-Browne on November 23, 2007, 06:30:49 pm
I have heard from a good authority - Vistek in Toronto - that Mamiya will soon be bringing out a new 120mm Macro "D" lens for the AFD II, following the concepts already used in the 28mm and the 75-150mm zoom.

I can find no announcements or press releases from Mamiya about this lens - but I have one on order and will report on it when I get it, probably in a month or two.

The design of new lenses from Mamiya will be interesting to watch. The 75-150 Zoom is some $3,300 and the 28mm is around $5,300. If they continue this path, they risk losing one of their primary advantages which is inexpensive lenses.

I am picking up an RZII to go with my AFDII right now and was wondering if Mamiya will continue to work with the RZII camera or are they going to follow the AFD 645 format only?
Is this mentioned any where? I find the RZ 6X7 format much more pleasing than the 645 for many reasons.
Thanks

I don't know about that. Higher price wouldn't automatically bar me from making the investment. It's not like they have the shelf life of a loaf of bread, and if I need a lens to do a job that brings in money, I WILL recoup the cost of it... it's just a matter of whether it's months or a year or two.

The paradigm for me is more related to quality and less related to cost (within reason).

I think the advantages of buying Mamiya are changing at the moment: There may be some bigger advantages from the collaboration of Mamiya and Phase to come in the next months and years.

Well I went with Phase P30 after finding out about the collaboration between them instead of going with leaf.. Leaf will survive but Phase Mamiya is a pretty powerful marriage if it all goes through...

My understanding is that the new macro is optimized for digital - the light hits the sensor closer to a right angle - hence the "D" suffix.

I don't think they will be way less considering that the margin on those lenses is next to nothing - can you point to a URL?

What I meant was that one of the advantages of Mamiya 645AFDII over Hy6/AFi or H3DII was the low cost of entry when lenses are taken into consideration. The Mamiya 645AFDII made a nice quality, low cost alternative to those systems. This seems to be disappearing - at least going forward.

The url is
http://harrysproshop.com/ (http://harrysproshop.com/)

The 28mm is $4700, the zoom is $2800. These are $CDN, but essentially the $CDN is at par with the $US.

I bought'em both and am very pleased.

Well, certain sectors require no crop factor (interiors, for instance), and the maximum sensor size is a lot closer to the AFD2 than the HY6, so one of my factors in choice. Didn't do Hassy because of overall high cost of everything (including used equipment), and not anything to do with quality (I think that all things considered it's a coin flip as to which of H3D / Mamiya Phase and Leaf you'd choose on quality)

I'm happy to have a system which can grow with me, as I can afford better lenses, even they are a bit more expensive.

I have no doubt that future sensors will take advantage of the full frame 645, rather than the 1.1 crop factor just now.  At least we will still be able to use the new Mamiya lenses.  Is that the case with the Hasselblad 28mmD lens.

It seems a good point, though I guess its always possible to gain entry with older lenses and then gradually accumulate the more expensive optics.

You can go a long way with the standard 80/2.8. Some people don't like it, but I do.

It will be interesting to see how the complete product line shapes up. The cost of the 28 does not seem too bad when you compare it not with older Mamiya lenses, but with its MF competitors. What will a 28mm lens cost for the Hy6? At the moment its a distant prospect, with schneiders history at making 28mm retrofocal lenses being a rather chequered one!

There are a lot of good second hand lenses out there for the 645 platform, much like the contax gear it will last a long time.

I noticed a rather startling statement on the LL interview with Henrik Hakonson on the tie up between Phase and Mamiya

The new camera system will be based on the Mamiya lens mount. Previous lenses will be able to be fitted. A new line of AF lenses will be made available. Some will be made by Mamiya, some by other lens manufacturers, including some from Europe. There will be leaf shutter lenses available as well for high flash sync speeds

Will Schneider be making lenses which fit this new camera? Zeiss?

Mix and match German and Mamiya glass on a new Mamiya fit body could be a very nice option.

For the type of money Mamiya is asking for their new lenses I would love to see Schneider, Zeiss or even Leica jump into the fray. Especially the former although it might be the most unlikely. But consider the 4/3 support by that company who knows.

It seems the price is $CDN 1.999 for the new 120mm. Weird that there is no mention of this lens on the Mamiya website.

It will be interesting to see what the price will be when it has a leaf shutter and auto-focus added. One can speculate that it will have those one day.

Hi

Here is some updated information. The new 120 D lens will be the same price. It will have a 16 bit cpu instead of the current 4 bit cpu. I got this info from the Australian agent for Mamiya. Also there are two more lenses to come out by Mamiya. The 150 2.8 & the 45-90 zoom. The 120 will be a focal plane shutter. From what I could gather is that there will be some leaf shutter lenses built by a German manufacturer ( name of company to come at a later date). The ZD will be supported by the new Phase One software. And there will be an adapter built for the V series lenses. It looks like Mamiya is updating there lens range for digital.

That's the same exact price they list for the "old" 120 lens. Other than the post a few days ago, how do we know there really is a new 120 coming? I'm not saying there's not, but you know how rumors get started, and then get repeated. I do think, however, that having a separate page on Vistek's site, with a D in the name, is suggestive

I'm glad to hear they're bringing back the 150mm 2.8, it was one of my favorites. I'd also like to see a 80mm 1.9 D, preferably with a sturdier build than the current 2.8.

Hi
From what I heard that the new 120 will still be manual focus. With the 16 cpu you can do more with the file afterwards if this makes any sense. The current model has a 4 bit cpu.

Anyone heard if they're updating the 35mm? I can't help but wonder why Mamiya are keeping their customers in the dark about the new lenses when obviously their distributors have been informed.
