I was wondering if anyone had numbers on how many MFDB's have been sold per year for the past few years. How many Phase backs are sold? Same for Hasselblad? Leaf? Sinar?
Thanks,

No idea, but i do know that the total number of backs sold the last few years for Norway is in the "a couple of hundred", based on total dealer turnover for the two main retailers, and a piece of internal info i picked up a while back. I know, far from a statistic, and the information is difficult to make any sort of precise assumtion on
There are about 4.7 million people living in Norway, if you want a reference number for population to go with the above.

This comes out from my memory and what I wrote earlier in another thread on this forum. Meaning I can't verify anything. Maybe our buddy TechTalk can verify some of this info.
About a month ago I saw a Hasselblad presentation made by Hasselblad salesrep from Denmark. In this brief presentation they stated that the High End digital market is about 100.000 units.
During the past few years the sales of film based medium format cameras has dropped from about 60.000 units to only a few thousands in 2006. Hasselblad sees this as the major reason to manufacture only dSLRs.
The presentation also featured information on their sales. It was clear that the H3D is their most wanted product and about 80% of total sales.
According to my memory of their presentation their turnover in 2006 was about 16 million euros with an expected growth of 18% for 2007. For comparison some CEOs get their turnovers worth of salary and Canon's (cameras) turnover was approx. 8 billion - 500 times of Hasselblad's TO.
This presentation was in a public event.

I wonder how many of the 100.000 were just given away to photographers who have a "leading" reputation. Doesn't look bad if viewers see for example Patrick Demarchelier and others "in the picture" shooting a H1/2/3/4.
Like Hasselblad's advertising line: How can you tell that this image was shot using a Hasselblad digital camera? Because of the size of the production. And you know in such production it's always a Hasselblad pros use.
So, it's not the image quality that should convince. Seems pretty hard to show the difference between 2500 and 25000 dollars of investment )

I found this article on the Alpa site last night called "12 Golden Digital Rules". In it they say:
"the photographic industry (selling worldwide about 6,000 to 8,000 backs each year) is probably not of very great importance to chip manufacturers."
http://www.alpa.ch/index.php?path=knowledg...e&detailpage=30 (http://www.alpa.ch/index.php?path=knowledgebase&detailpage=30)
That sounded a bit low to me, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense.
Cheers,
Andrew

Henrik Hakonsson, CEO of Phase One, said in a recent C|Net interview that roughly 10,000 backs are sold each year. He states P1 has over 50% of that market. Here's the link:

What statements?

Probably this quote by "PatrikR":
"About a month ago I saw a Hasselblad presentation made by Hasselblad salesrep from Denmark. In this brief presentation they stated that the High End digital market is about 100.000 units".
This was obviously meant for the total of the market since the begining of digital in 2004 and as such an estimate of the number of DMFB currently in the market. IMO a bit over-estimated and probably closer to 50'000 units than to the 100'000 mentioned.
Best regards,
Thierry

It may be a case of incomplete memory or context. I think it may be a reference to the estimated worldwide market of potential purchasers of medium-format digital. Don't quote me as I'm not certain of that.
-
Hmmmm.... that would be weird defining a market of potential purchasers. Potential based on what?
Now for the speculation;
Appr. 10.000 sold units annually seems to be the consensus (maybe even a bit on the high side).
If that is the case and if the percentages are somewhat in line with what people claim (Phase appr. 50%). It means Phase sells 5.000 units annually.
Leaf appr. 2000
Hasselblad 2000
Sinar 1000
Naturally these figures are not correct but it makes me wonder. Do these numbers justify continuation of that dealer network some of us have grown to detest? I can see how a fairly small team of people can manage a client base of 2000. Or is it just a little bit too much to handle by yourself?
We have a saying over here which is someting like, 'too big for the napkin, too small for the table-cloth'. Does that apply over here?
The reason I am asking is that every link in the chain needs to make money. Cutting out 1 link would make a product potentially cheaper but theoretically also enlargen the market itself (in numbers). Where you end up needing that extra link again. In that case the saying would become, 'in between a rock and a hardplace', I guess.
