Not a lot of traffic on this topic here, but I've been an interested participant (having bought an early 1d3).

sound like there's enough independent confirmation (also on Miranda) to take it out of the rumor category

That's the good thin one a large company like Canon and on a series like the 1.
The problem was there, not everythere but still big enough so that Canon hat to fix it to get the reputation back. Yes you could argue that it took probalby longer than a few hoped, but at least they fix it. I know quit a few other companies how don't care to much about their products after they are released.
