Title: Member's new book: Finding The Photograph
Post by: tvalleau on July 20, 2026, 04:00:14 pm
I’m pleased to share that my new short book, Finding the Photograph: Tools to Discover the Photo That’s Right in Front of You, is now available on Amazon.

It’s a compact 60-page field guide for photographers who know the feeling of standing there with a camera in-hand, yet nothing seems to come alive. The book grew out of nearly 70 years of photography, teaching, and printmaking, and it’s written especially for serious photographers, artists, students, and thoughtful lovers of photography who want to expand their photographic vision.

This is not a book about gear, settings, travel, the 'rule-of-thirds' or other usual compositional formulas. It’s about learning to see more deeply by using the formal elements of fine art, including line, shape, space, rhythm, balance, texture, value, unity, and more, as practical tools in the field.

The central idea is simple: when nothing clicks, ask a different question.

I just read the opening chapter on Amazon's available sample.

Bravo!

I believe this book will be immensely useful and inspirational for its stated purpose - 'learning to see more deeply..'

An example from the chapter on Line
“Across all the arts, line isn’t about the mark itself—it’s about the journey it sets in motion.”
