I like to shoot tethered to a MacBook Pro and have been using the canon software but wondered what else is available.
thanks

Capture One Pro is the most popular and maybe the only other real alternative. There is a way with Lightroom, but in fact it is really using the Canon capture in the background.

Curious, why are you asking? have you had problems with the Canon capture?

Bibble also allows tethered shooting, as does Breeze Browser I believe.

I use Capture One as it allows me to fire the camera from my desktop or at the camera. In the Bibble version I demo'd, the camera had to be fired only at the camera, don't know if this is still the case. I never tried Breezebrowser.

The Canon capture can fire from laptop or camera too. As well you can change the basic camera settings from the laptop. At least on the 5D though ,you cannot do a mirror lockup fire from the computer, which I find annoying.

*****Is there a capture setup that allows for RAW files to be written both to the CF card as well as the computer simultaneously? Since I shoot complex setups on the road, I am very interested in simple forms of backup that minimize hardware. Canon capture does this, Capture One does not.*****

Your best bet is to either copy the RAWs to an portable external FW drive at the end of the shoot, or copy them to a DVD. IMO, either of those would be more stable than having the CF card as the back-up.

I do that too of course. IME there is never enough redundancy, especially when shooting tethered under "field" conditions like architecture where you continually have to take down unplug and reset up, interior, exterior etc. I am surprised that C1 does not allow for this. It gives some added security.

Remote DSLR Pro from Breeze Systems is very good.

No problem.  It works  well.  At first I thought you couldn't get a preview from the camera when shooting tethered (Canon swears you can't) but found a work around by shooting to the card and computer.  Would like a capture software that would display a histogram based on the raw capture and with a lupe feature.  I think I may try it in conjuction with lightroom.

Phase One Capture One does both.
