I have separate log ons. One gets me forum access but no articles. The other is the reverse. Can they please be combined?

In a word, no.
In a little more detail, the forum software is completely separate from the software which underpins the main site and there is, as far as I can tell, no way of integrating the two. I am in the process of setting up a forum for my camera club, using the same (free and very good) forum suite, and we are running into exactly the same issue.
You can use the same ID and the same password for both main site and forum but must log in separately to each.

In my experience pretty much every forum package on the internet works this way.
The very few sites that have intergraded login are the ones I suspect of only existing so as to harvest your information and sell the statistics.
I often bemoan the fact that Facebook rose to prominence and ubiquity primarily because people did not want to go to the trouble of logging to websites that required login hygiene.
