I recently created an ICC profile with my HPZ3200 for RRP Aurora Natural 300gsm. I made some prints about 3 weeks ago and today went to re-print the same image and it is coming out more saturated than the ones I printed before. If I am making a mistake I don't know what it is. I am printing from Qimage and set the media type, the setting at the printer and the ICC profile to the same settings as the previous prints. I know that many people are extremely happy with the HPZ series printers, so I am not sure what is going on with mine. I seem to be able to get repeatable results from Epson P900 so I am at a loss with the HPZ. Any suggestions? I posted this question over at the DP review site (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/67744467) and it seems that Qimage Ultimate is not communicating properly with the HPZ printer driver. When I make changes via Qimage it does not seem to populate to the actual printer driver in W11. Many people are successfully using this printer so I am wondering where I am going wrong. I need to be able to add the print file name and path location to the paper print. Qimage does this wonderfully but it seems that my ICC information is not always making it to the print driver. If I have to change printing programs I will, but I need to be able to define the file name and path. I have a wonderfully smooth and repeatable workflow with my Epson P900. Not so at all with the HPZ3200. Can someone please help me get this sorted out?

You got my message with advice in the DPreview forum on a similar request. Maybe there still is another problem with your setup. Did you change the HP printer driver default to what I recommended? So for Color the Application manages color choice is set?
Let's start with the creation of the ICC profile. You used HP Printer Utility for that I guess. A new custom paper type created for that paper. Calibrated that paper. Printed the target, measured it. Saved the measurements on the computer and the ICC profile on the printer and the computer. Bound that profile to the custom paper type you made for RRP Aurora. Synchronised papers etc so your computer has the profile stored and the driver has that paper type as well. I am not so sure of the order of actions that is used, just using my memory here. Windows will save it at the usual place in System. Qimage Ultimate will store that profile in its map in Programs 86 as well if it has used it once in a job. The IC Profile is not lost, the custom Paper Type is not lost.
Four ways it could have gone wrong, in order of most likely:
There is something about the "more saturated than the ones I printed before" I worry about. My gut feeling is that double profiling happened in the 3 weeks ago prints and by that less saturated prints rolled off your printer. For example you had color management on in QU and Printer managed color on in the driver. I doubt double profiling now would deliver more saturated color so it has to be the other way around.
The second possibility is that different Paper Types are used now and then. As I have written before QU's interaction with the HP drivers can not be trusted. Never set real HP printer driver settings in QU but Shift/Click the Properties button to get the default HP driver settings and build the settings there, QU's menu will then obey to the higher command.
The third possibility is that you used Perceptual rendering three weeks ago and Relative or Absolute Colormetric rendering now and the image gamut is big enough to have an impact on these choices.
If you did not have an assigned color space profile in the image files then QU assumes it to be sRGB. If you used profile assigned files the next time or the other way around you could have created the problem as well.
In the QU log file of three weeks ago you can read which profile is used by QU and see the used rendering as well. You can not see what paper type setting was used (though it should be described in the file but isn't shown) or whether both the driver and QU did color management (also hidden). I think I asked Mike Chaney to show more of the log file text so HP users can at least read what was done before and set the required driver settings manually next time.
If you let the log file reset the conditions of three weeks ago then you can only trust in the QU menu the typical QU settings needed for QU like the QU color management on, the profile used there and the renderings, resolution setting, the resampling routine, sharpening degree etc. For some reason not even the paper type shown is reliable, an added custom Paper Type seems to shift the internal HP order of Paper Types so another Paper Type may appear. Click open the Properties menu and check what corresponds in both applications and what not after a job recall action.
I am aware that it is quite ridiculous to use Qimage Ultimate for HP printers. Around 2018 Mike decided to give QU more interaction with the printer drivers and I protested, appealed, sought compromises, to keep the old menu system for at least the HP drivers. To little avail, I got the Shift/Click function on Properties and had to be happy with that. QU's other features improved and I had a lot of experience and a lot of log files so throwing out this app was not wise for me. A failed print is still possible though even with my experience to deal with the circumstances.

[AN] Yes and thank you for taking the time and effort to help me with this issue. Since my workflow was working well with all the Epsons I have had over the years I never thought to question the QU interface. I only became aware of this issue when trying to make matching prints for a gallery show.
[AN] Yes I created a new paper preset for a number of papers.
Four ways it could have gone wrong, in order of most likely:

Never set real HP printer driver settings in QU but Shift/Click the Properties button to get the default HP driver settings and build the settings there, QU's menu will then obey to the higher command. [AN] I do not see where you can set the ICC profile in the printer driver. I only see the paper type. Does setting this load both the media type and profile? As far as I can see defining the ICC profile in QU does nothing.
The third possibility is that you used Perceptual rendering three weeks ago and Relative or Absolute Colormetric rendering now and the image gamut is big enough to have an impact on these choices.

Right. First thing I’d check is rendering intent - Relative Colormetric vs Perceptual. Changing that could do that.

There is no way you can put or select an ICC printer profile in the HP printer driver. The only way to use and select a (custom made) ICC printer profile is in the color management of an application like QU or Photoshop. Color management by the printer driver is a black box affair, no access to how it works for a user.
-
Any suggestions for an alternative to Qiamge for printing to the HPZ that provides the capability to capture the file name and path? If continue to use Qimage and update my printer settings in the HP driver, when I set the paper type will it also load the appropriate ICC profile. As I have seen changing it in Qimage does nothing and the only field to adjust in the HP drive is the paper type.

No experience with an app that can do that and there will be way more not aboard in other applications.
For HP printer drivers working together with Qimage Ultimate, you first SHIFT/CLICK on Properties in QU, then set the paper type in the HP printer driver and all the other things directly related to the printer. And also APPLICATION MANAGED COLORS is set there. OK the settings.
Then all the settings of the printer driver will appear correctly in Qimage Ultimate. Then you select the right ICC printer profile + renderings in Qimage Ultimate as it should be done because QU does the color management. And it will work correctly as I just noticed this morning when I gave two print proofs different renderings for the same ICC printer profile and the prints show the difference. BTW another unique feature of Qimage Ultimate, you can have two images on a print page and give them different renderings (handy for proofs) or different ICC printer profiles (handy to check profiles) or both different conditions (no idea for what).
That your Epson QU workflow may be easier and almost AI controlled is I guess the result of Mike's effort to make a foolproof environment. If you actually use APPLICATION MANAGED COLORS as I wonder whether you also have Printer Driver managed colors on for that machine.
Does your HP Printer Utility actually make ICC printer profiles? I thought that was lost since Windows 10 or so. I use HP Printer Utility for printing the target and measuring the target and then let ArgyllCMS do the ICC printer profile creation. what is your method?

On a Mac the universal driver for the Z does everything normally Except creating icc profiles. It does “calibrate ” ( linearize ) perfectly but I have to use one of my old macs to print and read the icc profiling step.

[AN] I use HP utility/color/create a new preset. Then the printer prints out a color sheet and uses it's own photospectrometer to read the patches and create an ICC profile. I think that this is working OK. I was just not understanding that changes that I made in QU were not making it to the print driver.

HP Utility still does profiling with Win 10 (so does the old APS software).
If it's not working in Win 10, it might require an earlier printer driver version. I started a thread on here a few months ago about Win driver versions for Z3200 series. Older versions are difficult to find but some volunteers helped me out, and I landed on a 2012-version (for my Z3200ps Rev B) and it's working ok. The drivers from 2018-ish start having issues (I think these are the "V3" drivers), and anything after that is "universal driver" garbage ("V4"). So there might be something between 2012 and 2018 that works okay but I couldn't find one.
(As for Win 11... I think I've seen some comments that things work okay, but I'm trying to avoid entering that world...)
Cheers

The APS software even? Abandoned that maybe 8 years ago. Still have a copy here and it was quite good for the Z3200, although HP Color Center's second version was as good.. Anyway I can cope with the ArgyllCMS solution and the profiles it creates are good.

[AN] I am in the W11 world and are by not means an expert but the HP utility created profiles seem to be working for me. I will be able to assess better once I know that my system with QU and the HPZ are playing nice with each other. I am running an older version of the HP Utility 4/5/2015. I also have an older version of the driver from 2015 but am running the latest driver

Haha yes I don't use APS either. But I was diagnosing some possible spectro issues and needed another software to compare with the HP Colour Centre. I still had the APS that HP gave me with the Z3100ps GP so I finally opened the box. Was surprised to see it installed and ran okay! I think it was made in the Win NT / 2000 era lol.

Ooh interesting! This is the first I've seen a 2015 driver version mentioned. What's the version number? It's for a Z3200ps? And it's the PCL3 raster driver (not the PS3 postscript driver)? If so I'd be very interested in getting a copy of the installation package for that to test it! I had a dropbox set up where volunteers could upload the files, I need to check if it's still working...

OK Let me know. I think I have both the PS and PCL versions

Ok awesome, thanks!! I found the dropbox link and it seems like it still works 🤞 I'll DM you... It's from an installation CD?

I just made two prints with two different profiles and the profiles seem to have changed when I changed them. A big THANK YOU, to Ernst Dinkla for stepping me through this. I would have never thought that the changes I was making in QU were not being transmitted properly to the HP driver. It seems that I can continue to use QU with the HPZ3200.

Got em, thanks! Turns out they are the same 2012 driver version that I already have (61.121.362.41). Based on what I've seen from other users, it's looking like that 2012 package was the last one that hp released before they went to the newer interface. For me, it's also been that last one where everything is fully functional. It seems to be a good package to run.
Glad to hear your QU stuff is working now too! (I still labour thru with PS CS5 lol...)

Nice that you got a grip on that situation.
Actually there should be more warnings on the DDIsoftware.com pages about the use of QU for HP printers and possibly a guide how to cope with the limitations of that combo. On the other hand I already suggested there that QU could have some feedback in its menus when QU detects that an HP printer driver is bound to QU's output. Like I did here: https://ddisoftware.com/tech/index.php?action=profile;u=262;sa=showPosts;start=15 mentioning greyed out entry windows. Or menu entries that could not reach the HP printer driver properly could be made red and if made in the HP printer driver itself they should show green in QU's menu. Job recalls can deliver issues like that too so where the interaction of QU and the HP printer driver can be corrupted just show the specific entries in QU's menus in red. There are some other things that could be changed without much impact on QU when used for other printer brands.

Yes I agree. I am not at all happy that I had issues related QU and the HPZ3200 that I was unaware for years. I can't tell you how much paper, ink and time was wasted because of this, not to mention the angst that went along with trying to put together matching images for a gallery show. I greatly appreciate your help and knowledge.

Does it work with W11, that would be the question for me
The driver? Would probably need to test it I guess unless there's mention somewhere of it working well for someone else (I can't be certain if I've read that somewhere). If Win 11 is similar to Win 10 then it should be relatively easy to test tho. Just uninstall the current HP driver package (in the add/remove programs section) and then install the driver version you want to try. (I did this a lot this year when testing driver versions...) You can actually leave the HP Utility in place because it's a separate software (I'm using the last version they made, 1.17.0.3). I think I usually remove the printer in the printers menu before uninstalling the driver package, just to make it "cleaner", tho I forget if it made any difference. If the test doesn't work out, can just repeat the steps and reinstall the driver package you were using before.
When I did my tests there were some key things I checked. In the Windows printer properties/preferences I made sure that bi-directional communication was enabled by the installation. If it's not, a lot of stuff will be broken, so it's unusable. This is where all the post-2012 drivers I tried tended to fail.
Assuming that's good tho then I check that HP Utility is working okay with that printer. "Bad" drivers are sometimes missing the Settings or Support tabs, and Colour Centre might be missing options or some are greyed out, especially the Paper Preset Management (which opens the separate Colour Centre window).
Then I check the print dialog in my app so make sure the printer is responding to setting changes, etc. But this might be very app-specific, especially since I'm using legacy PS CS5. I mean the drivers are very legacy too lol, but the OS isn't, so that combination is still a wild card.
Note the older drivers have generally been compatible with "all" Win OS versions for a while now. They're from Win 7 or earlier days and still work with 8, 10. Fingers crossed the same holds for 11. At least the drivers up until 2012. The later HP driver versions ("V3", "V4"), which are "universal" driver packages for a long list of HP printers, are terrible for Z3100 / Z3200 users. They either lack support for all the advanced features like colour profiling, etc, or they simply don't work. So far I haven't found anything newer than 2012 that works (61.12x...), and haven't found anything from the 6-year gap before 2018 ("V3", 61.18x...), which doesn't work.
-
for time being my system is working Thank God! So if it aint broke don't fix it!
-
Are you already using the driver version that you sent me? (The 2012 one?) If so then that's good news, we know it works in Win 11.

I am getting better results now after all the input but I am still have trouble to get the gloss enhancer to work. I created a new paper preset for the Red River Paper Palo Duro Softgloss Rag and the tonality and color print out pretty well but I have bronzing and have setup the GE to print in both the print driver and and at the printer but the GE is still not printing. I cannot seem to adjust it in the preset. See the image. Suggestions?
-
Do a head cleaning for the GE channel. If a cleaning doesn’t get it back replace the head.

I will try that but as shown in the screen shot I cannot adjust it at the preset level. It seems to be off by default and seems to be available in other paper types but I can't get it to load a new preset with a type that allows GE.

Hi, which paper preset did you choose when you created your new paper type for that Red River paper? Each preset has different hard-coded settings (they're in the printer firmware), so if you use a preset that has gloss enhancer disabled, then I think you can't enable it after. So you need to create your new paper type using a paper preset that has GE enabled.
The list of paper preset settings is available in different HP docs (often called "Working with other commercially available paper"), but for convenience here's one on Mark Lindquist's reference site:
http://z3200.com/Working_with_other%20Papers_HP-Z3100_z3200_Printers.htm
(It changes a bit from version to version, but generally the info is mostly the same.)
Assuming that paper is relatively heavy and can accept higher ink levels, then something like the "Photo Pearl Paper (more ink)" might be one to try? Or the "Photo Gloss / Semi-Gloss / Satin Paper (more ink)"? Both have GE enabled, plus the highest ink limit of the non-matte papers (46.0). The only differences are the carriage and starwheel heights, so you can choose whichever one best suits that media.

EDit: it could be that what Kyle wrote before about older HP PCL printer drivers behaving better is also happening here, some years ago I had to change the default printer driver preferences to gloss paper + GE on if I wanted to get GE working. So what follows here is how I have it now while I usually print on matte papers:
Make sure that you have both a glossy paper and the gloss enhancer option on in your default printer driver preferences. For the least bronzing use the gloss enhancer all over the print page, so not economy mode. Bronzing is the least visible with some HP RC papers though, third party papers can show it more. If you want to use economy mode then use a QU print filter that brings the RGB 255 255 255 to 254 255 255. Just enough to get the pure whites in the image also covered with GE. White margins made with QU will not get GE then.

I made a copy and renamed the OMS file for the RRP Palo Duro Soft Gloss Rag and imported it again and this time I was able to get the GE to work. Once again I thank everyone for your input. One thing I am still having trouble with is the interface from QU to the print driver. Even if I use shift and left click to access the driver defaults and make changes there it does not translate to the actual driver. When I load the driver from settings it still has the old paper type. It seems that the only way to get this work is to always change paper type from the driver in settings. To date I have really liked QU but these issues with driver interface are causing me a lot of heartburn not to mention wasted paper and ink. I would go to another printing platform but I need the auto file name and path.

Ah ok it's an .OMS preset. I wonder what they did with their custom .OMS file compared to one of the generic tunable ones from HP.
