every search ive don on Lightroom's raw details tells me what its does....with nary a mention of how that a accomplished.
I suspect its local contrast of some variety but cant find any discussion of its "mechanics" anywhere.
I further suspect that some of my fellow posters here have a good grasp of said mechanics and the necessary gift to describe them in cogent concise terms.

Raw Details, previously called Enhance Details, produces crisp detail and more accurate renditions of edges, improves color rendering, and reduces artifacts. The resolution of the enhanced image stays the same as the original image. This feature is handy for large displays and prints, where fine details are visible. The supported file types are raw mosaic files from cameras with Bayer sensors (Canon, Nikon, Sony, and others) and Fujifilm X-Trans sensors.

if found one mention of DeMosaicing....in an article on Raw Details. most prevalent information focused on results rather than mechanics

I remember a photoshop plugin or filter that Removed "jaggies". and employed the image of a Jaguar in its logo some 25 years ago.
I think it ran on Photoshop 5

Good to mention is that you better do first the necessary corrections in lightroom on the original RAW and then apply the enhanced detail.
why? because the enhanced detail produces a DNG file with the correctons stored in the DNG.
1 if you want later to go back to the original raw you will find you have to start from scratch. (since no correctons were stored with the original RAW.)
2 now you can delete the DNG after using it. That saves a lot of space.
3 in the near future the enhanced detail and ai-NR will be better - so you can go back to your original raw and apply the new version.
against:
if you do first correction on the original RAW and convert it to an enhanced DNG, the used AI-masks will be calculated again with a possible different (wrong) outcome.

Metadata instructions for corrections which is the case with all DNGs, otherwise, just as raw as the original at THIS point. Enhanced detail produces a a linear DNG: partially rendered, not fully raw. Which is why the enhanced DNG will be saved as a new DNG file with the original filename and "-Enhanced" appended. Stacked with the original.

So if you start with an original-Raw of 60MB - you get an enhanced linear DNG of 135MB on top of that containing the original-Raw file.
Do you say can throw the original RAW away without any compromises?

Only if you believe that no better enhancement method will be introduced in the future, I'd guess.
