My Designjet Z3100 keeps asking to replace printheads. Which print heads seems random. After booting up 100%, the screen shows initializing, ink is pumping left and right, the carriage moves left and right, to the center, to the right and a little to the left, the screen then shows prepare ink system for about 3 sec, initialize, replace printheads incomplete, reseat faulty printheads. After reseat the faulty printheads remain.
The carriage test stops on Vpp with error 02.1:10. I replaced: trailing cable, carriage PCA, power supply and mainboard, flexible connections between PCA and printheads. Contacts checked and cleaned. All printheads and full cartridges work in another printer. The ink tubes are bled.
What else can I do?

The expert on this kind of thing is Mark L. . I have emailed him a few times this year but never heard back.
I hope he is ok. That’s unusual for him.

What I would do first is unplug the printer then remove the formatter board, that slips out easily with one screw It is on the back top right of the printer. Clean the contacts with alcohol and dust off down in there with compressed air.
If you have already done that or it doesn’t do anything, ..turn on the printer and wait for the heads to move along the carriage and quickly unplug the printer. Remove all the print heads and put them in baggies. Then remove all the ink carts put them in baggies. Let it sit overnight unplugged.
Next morning turn on the printer with all heads and inks removed. Follow the printer instructions for putting heads and inks back in. I believe Mark had people put in one at a time as the printer asks for them.
This has fixed a few similar issues more than once I believe.
If this doesn’t work I would contact LPS . This guy is the an expert on these units and sells new and refurbished parts for them. Be patient he is like a one man operation I believe and will call you back. Be polite and he can help trouble shoot issues.

Hi Decanenwerk, Thank you for your message. I cleaned and checked the formatter's contacts. Unfortunately, that doesn't help. I also tested and checked all cartridges and printheads. After the printer was turned off for a while, I also replaced the print heads one by one. That didn't help either. I also turned the printer off, disconnected the power and network and removed the new battery for a while. This tests the hard disk (FSCK). That didn't help either. It seems that something is going wrong in the firmware. What could also be is that an electronic part (such as Carriage PCA) has a defect that causes another electronic part (such as head PCA) to malfunction. I also think that chance is small because I have made several changes.

The following is my system for restarting/resetting a Z series printer.
First, turn off the printer from the front console of the printer. Unplug it. Turn the back switch to off. Let it sit for a good hour unplugged.
Next, plug the printer back in, switch to on, and unplug it quickly from the back as you see the carriage head move.
Move the carriage head by hand to where you can unload the printheads. Open the printhead cover and remove each printhead and put them all in a large freezer back that can be tightly sealed.
Next remove all the inks and place in freezer bags.
Shake all inks and printheads vigorously until you can’t stand it any more.
NOW, plug in the printer from the back and wait for it to come on to the point where it asks for ink. Do the inks one by one allowing the computer to verify the inks are each HP product. The carts must be at least 50-60 % full, (or new).See if it lets you go through the process of verifying if they are expired - if so, say you are ok with that. Whatever it will not take, notate. Try to see how many inks it will accept.
Once all inks are in, the printer should ask for printheads. Follow instructions replacing each one. Next, the printer will want to do a printhead alignment on glossy paper. Do so.
If you get this far, you should be able to go on and print.
If you get “reseat cartridge” error message - turn the printer off with the switch in back. Often it will clear the error message and go on.
It’s critical to do these steps in the exact order. Even if you’ve already done this, do it again. It could take several times, but I have found persistence pays off.
If you’ve replaced a printmech board by itself, you will have a problem. The printmech and the main pca board and hard drive must all match. The printer checks the serial numbers and will not proceed unless there is a match.
As John Dean said, the LPS guy (Tim?) knows better than anyone - if you’re still stymied call him.

I had already read and applied this advice of yours before. The printer accepts the cartridges. After each printhead, the printer beeps to indicate acceptance. After closing the lid and the window, the carriage moves to the right and within 3 seconds it asks to replace three incorrect print heads. Reseating and replacing printheads does not help. The printer does not begin preparing the ink system. I have tried with multiple sets of cartridges and sets of printheads. I have four printers here, two of them suddenly and almost at the same time got this problem. Perhaps a mains voltage peak is the cause of an electronic defect? It is also remarkable that a friend of mine is experiencing the same problem after the printer has not been used for a while was turned on all the time. Coincidence does not exist?
I know that printmech, formatter, harddisk and mainboard belong together. However, I have managed to replace a part more often. I have always kept harddisk and formatter together. I expect the printer to give an error message (59. or 79.) immediately upon startup if parts are not accepted and don't get to the point where it asks for printheads.

Yea I would call LPS. If you had a power spike you may have blown a board.

What OS and what drivers are you using Loek? If Mac, frequently reverting to an earlier driver, firmware and utility will clear these problems up. So if you can say what version (A or B ) your printer is, what OS you are using, and software plus utility, we may be able to help you… possibly….

Hi Mark, I'm using Windows 11 and I think the latest driver. But this is irrelevant to my problem. The error messages come when the printer starts up. There is no print job and the printer is not connected via USB or Ethernet. For the Z3100 I used the firmware TR12-MVL-U-7.0.0.3-7. I also have version TR12-TR12PS_07_00_00-3-2 In an A and a B version. The printer does not accept those versions.
I now have an idea of what my problem is. Some cartridges turned out not to work properly. I always fill these myself with ink and I make sure they are bled and do not leak. I use decoders to trick the printer. There were also print heads that were apparently not completely filled, the weight was 46 grams instead of 58 grams. I refilled this one. After a lot of changing printheads (also new and refurbished) the printer started up and after a long preparation of the printing system finally came up with the message about alignment. I seem to have a whole collection of failed printheads. I'll keep looking until I'm sure about the causes.

I wonder why printheads are rejected or considered defective. A chip with four contacts is stuck on the print head. This chip looks like the chips in cartridges. What is the function of this chip? I always clean the contacts on the print head and in the carriage thoroughly. Does the printer with this chip detect that a print head is installed? Is it also detecting whether the correct type is in the correct slot? When I insert a print head, the printer immediately beeps for acceptance. After closing the windows, the carriage moves to the right and immediately returns with the message replace incorrect print head. Is there information written in this chip that this printhead is wrong? Or is the printer not making a good connection via the flexible contacts with (defective?) nozzles in the print head?
If the printer spends some time preparing the ink system but does not end it completely, could the cause be that the ink supply is insufficient due to too little ink, air in the cartridge, ink tube or print head?
Could the above be correct? What is your vision?

Hi all. I've been working on the third Z3200 for a while now, which keeps asking for print head replacement. I also replaced: print heads, cartridges, carriage pca, tow cable, flexible connections between pca and print heads and power supply with mainboard. Also reset EEROM and put the firmware on it again. Also de-energized the printer for a while and removed battery and performed FSCK. The test of the carriage fails at Vpp reading. With the print heads installed comes error 02.1:10 and without printheads comes error 79:04. I also suspect that the software is in a loop and can't figure it out. Is it possible to reset the software? What else could I do?

Well, according to the service manual, It's related to the Carriage PCA. Could it be that it needs reseating/reconnecting and/or was not properly replaced?.
In the HP forum, somebody mentioned "changing the carriage box" as final fix.

Hi, thanks for your comments Sportmeester and Cyruspy. All cartridges are full (more than 150 grams) and there is no air in the ink tubes. The cartridges also work well in another printer. This also applies to the print heads. The manuals do indeed give the carriage and the tow cable as a possible cause. I often made these connections on other printers and kept getting meticulously checked. Could it be a problem in the software?

I also replaced those ribbons several times. Once, one of the gilded contacts had disappeared. It's a bit of fidgeting and fidgeting, but it's doable.

@Loek49 I realize this is ancient history by now but did you ever solve this issue with your Z3100?
I've had this occur with 2 printers. I bought a used Z3200ps stuck in this state and rescued it by purging air from the ink tubes and installing fresh heads and carts, as described above.
But my Z3100ps is stuck like this now, and not responding to that approach. Same situ as yours, same error codes, all heads work in the other printer, but it still says "printhead replacement incomplete" and repeatedly wants the B-GN head reseated (no matter how many different heads I try) and occasionally other heads. I'm about to remove the carriage for examination and possibly replace it, but not confident it'll help based on your story.
I believe I caused this mess by accident. I was "reviving" the printer after several months unused. The first diag plot failed because of ink gunk from the carriage bottom on the paper. After cleaning that mess and also the heads and carriage contacts, during the printer's initialization cycle it fried the B-GN head (cooked at the nozzle), and shortly after the E-G head did same. (Both heads were in excellent condition before that.) I suspect I didn't wait long enough for the alcohol on the carriage contacts to dry completely and it caused a short. Costly mistake!
So in my case new carriage parts might actually help because it's possible I damaged them.

Bob Wert from LPS computer had a video on this problem on youtube. You have to purge the lines. There are many tools on Ebay from China that work just fine. You may have to replace some printheads also. I had this problem and got it sorted out.

Yes that's what I'm saying, purging air from the ink tubes helped rescue my Z3200, but it hasn't fixed my Z3100. Maybe it could have helped in @Loek49's case tho.
Also FWIW I have mixed opinions on those seals they sell. I think they're a great idea but maybe too thick, and possibly the material is too hard. I've had them on brand new heads on my rescued Z3200 and a significant amount of air still got into them. They might be helping to reduce air getting into the ink tubes, but they seem to do little for air getting into the heads.
Also they make the heads sit higher than normal which puts the electrical contact pins on the very edge of the contact pads. This could mis-seat the heads, and place them dangerously close to shorting to an adjacent pad. Given I've just had 2 heads electrically fried in the same day I'm very wary of anything messing with the head contacts.
For now I've removed those seals from my Z3100 heads, and might remove from my Z3200 too.

I've removed and disassembled the Z3100 carriage. The PCA looks mint. Both trailing cables have electrical continuity on all pins from end to end. Same for all 6 of the printhead flex contact strips.
The only visual defect I can find is some small cracking/creasing of the plastic coating on the printhead flex contact strips, but they're still ok electrically.
No smoking gun.

Did you try those service tests?
i am in the middle of repairing an old ( 2011) Z3200 and in my case the problem is a bongo - so it seems - that does not function well.
update _I put in a new inksupply part but the problem remains:
message "Grey is out of ink" while it is not...
what could trigger that?

Yes I have the exact same result as the OP on the Carriage electronics service test: 02.1:10 error for the pens voltage Vpp. (That's why I joined this thread.) You have that same error too?

Just following up that a new carriage PCA appears to have fixed my 02.1:10 error and Vpp pens voltage failure on my Z3100ps. How I got there...
I confirmed that the carriage trailing cables and the printhead contact flex strips in the carriage were okay by trying the ones from my Z32 in my Z31 and there was no change, still same error and still rejecting any B-GN printhead.
The next suspect was the carriage PCA itself. Z31 and Z32 have different carriage PCA so I couldn't do a similar test. Ordered an entire unused carriage assembly because it was cheaper than just the PCA itself. Included the trailing cables and all sensors.
Installed the new carriage/trailing cable assembly and the error was gone and it accepted B-GN heads again. Win.
(After that it still fried 2 more printheads (total of 4 now...) and faulted a fresh ink cartridge but I think (hope) it's for reasons specific to the heads/carts themselves -- veryyy old heads which I may have damaged during ink priming, and the usual challenges with air in the system.)

I cleaned it but that was not enough to solve the problem...
after replacing it the problem was gone but a new problem came up: the right reservoir had a broken primer motor. the plastic clickers broke off...(?)
I ordered a new one in china 300€- so spend some money but with also a new belt from LPS in place i believe it will do well...
and have a great 44 inch printer again -I Hope
second hand ink and heads- buy them cheap as you still can... the ink will stay good forever -or at least some years i find.

Ah ok, good we clarified that then for anybody reading this thread in the future, since it's about the 02.1 error and they might confuse it with the issues you had and think they need to replace the mainboard. (Replacing the mainboard PCA is only the very last resort item for the 02.1:10 error in the service manual.)

I then replaced it with another new one and this one worked. When I ran the carriage test is showed the same error: 02.1:10. It seems that one bad printhead can cause other printheads to be rejected also.

What is the specific failure in your the carriage test?
For my Z3100 it was the "Vpp pens voltage", and replacing the carriage PCA fixed it. (Actually replaced the entire carriage + trailing cable, because cheaper, as described above.)
If you have access to multiple printers, try the heads in another printer to confirm if they are ok.
Five printheads fried while working thru my error 02.1 saga. :-[ Basically melted/debonded where the orangey contact strip is bonded to the nozzle face, like shown here:

Same test results I had, interesting. In my case however replacing all the heads with known good ones didn't fix it. It kept failing until I replaced the carriage PCA. So I wasn't as lucky as you were, I had to throw more money at it. :-\
That's the frustrating things with these printer errors, they can be from many different causes and it's not always possible to know which without the expensive trial-and-error of replacing things. And it's often like whack-a-mole...

At least we can usually get them up and running again 8)! Not always so with other brands
During this troubleshooting process I received some help from the folks at https://plotter-nrw.de/. I bought a refurbed HPZ3200 from them and the follow up support has been excellent. I have two 3200s here is Switzerland and one in the US. They have been super helpful on both continents. The website is all in German. That is what translators are for.
One step that they told me to do when troubleshooting was to shut down the printer and then remove all the printhead and then restart it. If no errors are displayed and the printer is only asking to install printheads then this means that the printer is OK. That was one of the steps we used to identify the bad printhead. Actually 2 bad printheads. One of them was new in a sealed package and it was still bad. Fortunately I bought two and the second one was good. I share this for the benefit of the HPZ3200 DIY repair community

I don't think that technique works in all cases because I've done it manyyy times with known good heads from another printer and the printer was not okay, it needed a new carriage PCA.
I would not consider a head "bad" without confirming it in another printer, especially a brand new one just opened. The reason is air in the lines/head can cause these printers to reject good printheads.
If a head is rejected in more than one printer (and it's not full of air), then it's likely bad. This is easily confirmed by looking at the printhead error codes and status under Main Menu > Information > Printer Logs > Printheads. The corresponding codes/status are given in the Service Manual.
Did you try the "bad" printheads in your other printer(s)? Especially the new one from the package?

I tried both heads in my other printer including both the new and old ones. Both were rejected by my other printer. That is how I determined that both the old one and one of the new ones was bad. When I put the second new one in the printer it accepted it and I was able to proceed with printhead alignment. When you did it with an empty carriage you only a got replace printhead message and no other error message? I was able to get a refund for the defective printhead.

Yes, it prompted to install heads, but it would always reject the B-GN slot (and occassionally others) when known good printheads where installed. Running the carriage service test gave the 02.1:10 error with failure on Vpp / pens voltage. Replacing the carriage PCA ultimately fixed the problem.
So that's what I mean that starting printer without (or with) heads and not seeing an error on the screen doesn't necessarily mean the printer is ok. I think it's probably true for the majority of cases tho, because I assume most hardware failures would put an error on screen. But for whatever reason the particular carriage PCA issue I had did not, it only showed an error when running the service test (which requires heads to be installed).

hello, just an update to my previous problem.. I installed a new HP servicestation from alibaba- china.
The good thing is this service station needs to be replaced after some years and is part of many HP printers - the reason you can still buy it new.
costed 350 incl 2month containership delivery...it comes with the ventilator -all the motors and drop detector. (An ink cartridge/ printhead new now costs about 100€ ex tax !!)
It seems to work fine and has made my printer work again.
The new servicestation weight was 2050 grams- the old 2850 grams - so 800 gram wasted ink.
I know that it can carry about 2kg of wasted ink before it spills over - but this one was 15 years old so that was the problem- the plastic tickkers broke off ( that control the waste ink tubes)
so with also a new LPS belt inside I hope it will do some more printing.
