Title: Compact Battery Charger and Portable Solar Panels
Post by: JoeKitchen on December 16, 2022, 11:31:23 am
Good Morning,

I am looking for a compact Phase One battery charger for travel usage.  Optimally one that is compact and can be operated via USB and wall outlet.

Likewise, I am looking for a decent folding solar panel system that I can use to charge batters.

Anyone have any recommendations for either?

dunno how well those would work in the field.

Personally (and I do quite a bit of solar with my RV) I would just buy more batteries and/or a DC charger for the car/portable power pack

Thanks.

I plan on going to Dry Tortugas National Park for a few days and will not have access to any electricity (or running water, food, cooking fuel), so I need something to recharge my batteries.

How about a portable battery power supply?  Yeti have solar panels for theirs too and I expect others do as well.

in that case I would suggest a portable solar battery bank and plug the DC charger into that. Solar charges the battery bank, which in turn provides the power to your P1 charger

I built my own by putting a 50 ah lifepo4 battery in a carry case (an ammo case as it happened) and then fitted input connectors for the solar charger to send to, and DC & USB outputs so I can charge my phones, tablets, and camera batteries as and when needed.

Search Amazon for solar generator and you'll see nice prebuilt ones - but they are a few $ - hence why I built my own.

Jackery Portable Power Station are supposed to be good

Take lots of batteries.
I use a 10,000mAH USB Power Bank. There are bigger ones available like 30000mAH.
Just get the mAH capacity of your batteries and multiply by the number you need to charge plus some more.

Thanks, all these look like great options.

A power bank seems to the best one though.

USB-C PD is your friend - why take a bunch of small batteries, when a few slightly larger ones will do everything and then some.  I love the GoalZero Yeti's, but there are a few different brands that are powerful enough.  Dave wrote about it a while ago.

If you intend to fly with battery, double check the maximum mAh.  26,800 rings a bell and yes, I have had it checked, also, make sure the rating is legible, again I have had  it questioned.
