A great reference source to evaluate the performance of cameras/lenses in real-life wildlife photography are the Top-100 Audubon Photography Awards that are published each year. Nice article. Personally I use various Nikon Bodys and 200-500 and 500 VR lenses. Also Panasonic G9 with a zoom lens. One link in the chain of reasonable cost/budget would be the software/raw converter one chooses. DXO PL 4 lets your high ISO images shine with minimal effort IMHO. This allows for slower glass especially if your camera/lens combination has some form of vibration reduction.
