Title: MFD - we seek more, thus what is our monitor of choice?
Post by: Lust4Life on November 09, 2020, 04:09:36 pm
As a multi decade shooter of MFD, we all seek out the best in gear.
Sure, we have our personal preferences but even the worst of what we argue, I should say discuss, is more than what others that shoot seek.

That as a given, it is time to replace my 34" LG monitor.  So much has changed in the world of monitors for our work since I purchased it.  A bit overwhelming, much new to be learned AND we have the "Black Friday" sales in front of us!

Thus, I'd like to hear what those of us HERE have been buying over the last year or so, why and do you like what you got or what do you now wish you had bought.

Given: I shoot landscapes as fine art.  Extract every bit of dynamic range I can from array/sensor AND push it to it's limit.  I have the X-Rite I1 Pro gear to calibrate the camera to monitor to Canon Pro 2000 printer.

Honestly, I prefer the Hasselblad H 50MP and up cameras BUT I can no longer take the weight of the gear, now using the GFX 50s and making myself happy with it - has a lot of advance feather the H does not, but I still prefer the large landscape of the true MFD sensors in H and Leaf.

Thus, I'm seeking your wisdom - I've spent hours looking at website "reviews" and don't trust what I am reading - internet has become way to cluttered with BS sites that just promote who is paying them.

And yes, I'm getting "grumpy" in my old age!

So, no range wars, just facts from personal experience would be appreciated.

PS:  My 34" monitor - over the last year I find I focus on the center 1/3 of the screen and finding it difficult to see in focus the right and left quadrants of the screen without moving my face to be directly in front of them to focus.

Wondering if one of the curved monitors would solve that issue.

Let's have some fun,
Jack

Jack - I haven't looked for monitors for the past nine years or so, because my NEC MultiSync monitors (PA242W and PA271W), set to the AdobeRGB profile, are still performing beautifully. However, I understand that Apple's new 27" iMac monitor was designed for imaging and could be outstanding.

Nothing Apple makes or provide hold a candle to a smart reference display system ala SpectraView.

I run the Mac Pro late 2013 with 2TB SSD, 64GB RAM, etc.
I need nothing faster.

Just a great monitor to replace what I have.

Eizo CG319x as main and an older Nec 32 inch as second monitor.

Cheers,
Bernard

Very much like the 3:4 screens like the one i have at the moment.
Alas it is all wider nowadays. Another reason to stick tot the good old NEC.

I'm currently running a fairly old NEC SpectraView which is serving me well and still calibrating accurately, but I am aware that it is old and I'm in the process of researching an eventual replacement.

I'm not looking for a display monitor as such but rather an editing monitor. To that end I find the high resolution 4K monitors to be less than optimal for my intended task.

So far I'm leaning towards the Eizo ColorEdge CG2730 or the BenQ SW270C, both wide screen, 27 inch, 2560 x 1440 resolution and having plenty of room for tools. Either would fit my needs perfectly, the BenQ obviously being the less expensive option.

Bernard - first, glad to see my Ole Friend is still vertical during these challenging times!
Now stay that way!

OK, your unit I will lust for, but at $5K that just isn't going to happen in this life time!
But thanks for letting me know at least you got one.

Do you have a second favorite that a "mortal" could afford?    :-)

Best, Jack

Eizo just launched some some nice coloredge displays that are not too expensive. If you don't need 4K you have to spend about 1500€.
see for instance the Eizo cg2730

OK, Seems since my past monitor strictly for photo editing was purchased, there are many more variable factors introduced into the monitor industry.

For our purposes, What is the ideal specs for a monitor to have? Adobe RGB/DCI-P3/IPS/contrast ratios/#of colors displayed/ 10 bit, 14 bit etc/ ......... it goes on and on!

Suggestions from ACTUAL experience?

Jack

Thanks Jack, much appreciated.

I hope things are ok for you as well.

The NEC I used as main screen until earlier this year was outstanding and still is very good. I would definitely recommend it.

Cheers,
Bernard

Eizo -

I use 2 Eizo CG monitors - love them
best monitors I've ever used / built in self-calibration whilst I sleep / easy on the eyes for those stupidly long post-production sessions.
Highly recommended

Best regards

Sam

I have an Eizo EV3237FX-BK (30.5"), and an older 24" Color Edge and calibrate with the i1 Pro.

I’ve been very happy with my 27” NEC w/ Spectraview for several years now, and have no urge to explore other options.  I’m also a fan of larger screen pixels for retouching in Photoshop - no 5-6k for me.

THIS!

Other than at Costco's display, I've not had a chance to use or see a 4k or above monitor used with PS, DXO or other photo editing tools.

Would you please define what is the disadvantage so I am sure I understand, and is that just at 5K and above or also at 4K, which is what I was planning the purchase of.

Jack

I simply dislike retouching on high res screens (4K and above), preferring the lower res screens where the images are displayed larger allowing me to easily scroll through the image in detail, section by section, when doing post work. Some get around this by retouching at 200% but that's an option I dislike even more. A screen resolution around 2560x1440 is the perfect compromise for my needs.

On the other hand if I was looking for a display screen then the high res screen comes into its own.

I don't doubt that others may have very different needs and preferences.

I should add that these considerations are also likely to be influenced by the sensor resolution of the cameras being used. For example my ideal screen would vary considerably if I was shooting with a 12MP sensor or a 100MP sensor, or for video work.

As an aside, here in the UK the NEC Spectraview monitors used to be stocked by specialist colour management companies such as Color Confidence and also by many higher end photographic outlets, but this seems to be no more. Both these type of outlets now only stock Eizo and BenQ. Can anyone account for this change, please?

I'm currently shooting with the FujiFilm GFX 50S but will move to a 60 or 100 in the near future.

Probably a higher profit margin would be a primary cause?

I'm currently shooting with Z7 cameras and have no intention to change.

If I was considering 100MP I'd be testing 4K.

Yes, I would imagine so.

The iterations of variables that can be considered in this "equation" are without limits.

Decided to go for a mid level QLED yesterday morning - brought it home - hooked it up and immediately calibrated with my X-Rite iPro kit.

All I need, and more than I expected!!
Will spend the cash saved on my next update camera or more like photo trip once the vaccine it out, etc.

Samsung QLED 60T 43" flatscreen for $428.00!

So much "real estate" that is sharp and excellent color balance.
The default was not too far out of wack but the X-Rite brought it all into better than I had hoped for!

Thanks for input - Jack
