Title: Ad hominem definition
Post by: Frans Waterlander on September 11, 2020, 03:43:02 pm
Straight out of Merriam-Webster. Definition of ad hominem:
1: appealing to feelings or prejudices rather than intellect
2: marked by or being an attack on an opponent's character rather than by an answer to the contentions made

To me that's a perfect description of what went on in a recently closed thread and many, many before that one.

Glutton for Punishment definition:
The posting agenda that can be seen here and in other photo forums, the list is sadly massively long but so consistent: Ask a question of the group, then immediately dismissed and push back on anything said that doesn't sync with the predetermined desired answer (notice the question marks!) To me that's a perfect description of what went on in a recently closed thread and many, many before that one:

The answer to the original question asked by James, in the post locked, (as this one should be too): What's your problem? As shown above, lots and lots of problems. Mostly accepting multiple answers from those in the know, answering the questions becomes the real problem.

Andrew, do you keep a diary of Frans's comments by your bedside, reading them every night, just dreaming of how you will refute them?

I have a list and now you can too, bound to keep growing.  :D
Easy to refute as illustrated if you read the posting agenda and history; I'm hardly the only one doing so.

I don't have access to a copy of Merriam-Webster, so I can't tell how selectively you are quoting or under what heading the quotation appears. You appear to confuse argumentum ad hominem with simple abuse. The two are not the same.

See https://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=135408.msg1177003#msg1177003.

In addition to avoiding argumentum ad hominem, this forum could do with a bit less argumentum ad nauseam.

Suggesting that I'm quoting selectively might be a good example of ad hominem. Anyway, Merriam-Webster and other dictionaries are available on-line for free for anyone to use. Here are some examples:

True, but they incessantly repeat themselves.

The provision of facts often bounce off their intended target, prompting repetition until it's too tiresome or all hope is lost.

Yet another perfect example of ad hominem.
Yet another perfect example of your push back. And your inability to move on from it not being accepted.

So, why not tell us what you think the definition of ad hominem is and why? Reading the nine definitions I linked to might help your thought process. That would be a better use of everyone's time.

So, why not tell us what you think the definition of ad hominem is and why?

Why allow you to push back, as seen in the results of hundreds of posts outlined. After you ask a question, the vast majority who've answered your questions get your typical expected and repeatable push back to the answers, all while not taking you seriously as a result.
Short answer: Whatever definition provided, you'll never accept it. As predicted. As expected. As seen over and over again. The result being more CWOBaT (colossal waste of bandwidth and time). Which is what you wish as so well outlined in your history of posting and so thoroughly outlined here already.  :o
You realize, you can lock this thread of silliness of your own design, anytime you wish.

Suggesting that I'm quoting selectively might be a good example of ad hominem.

It could be so construed only by those who persistently fail to understand the meaning of the term.

Anyway, Merriam-Webster and other dictionaries are available on-line for free for anyone to use. Here are some examples:

I looked at the first few, which are entirely in agreement with the definition and example I gave elsewhere in these forums (see the link to my post, above). I have better things to do with my time than to examine all the others, but I don't imagine they differ significantly.

Jeremy, you may want to do your homework before commenting. Your definition and examples in the other thread are in conflict with the definitions I linked to. I'll give one example out of a myriad I could give.
You wrote: "It has nothing to do with feelings, or emotions, or perceptions."
The second link: "Appealing to the emotions rather than to logic or reason."
The distinctions you make in the other thread don't appear to be shared by others. At least one of the linked websites comments that the definition has broadened over the last 100 years.
