Title: Taking two shots of the image

I have watched Albert Watson take two shots of a persons portrait with the camera on a tripod. One right after another and combine them tougher in photoshop. Is this done just to make a bigger file or is there another reason?

I have not seen what he does but I suspect it is nothing more than taking two shots in case they blink and picking the best eyes in Photoshop. Pretty common.

  Thanks for the reply. What he does is takes two shots (he terms it "hits") and combines them in photoshop.

He is treating the subject as a panorama and stitching the two shots into a single shot. The result is a wider angle of view but without the distortion associated with wide angle lenses. Also increasing the resolution, of course.
Very talented this Albert Watson indeed.
