That encapsulates the massive difference between looking into the eyes of a cat as looking into those of a dog or a horse.

No; it isn't anything to do with status: it has everything to do with communication.
A cat knows nothing about communication outwith its own species. Don't forget: we had a pack of them, about twenty-something at once. Each had a name, each had a personality, but not a one was able to communicate like a dog can. Of course, it could be that my Spanish wasn't good enough.
Cats know about killing, they know about death of other cats in the mob and they know about rape. Of course, if doing like their big cousins do, biting the nape of female necks and holding them there isn't a forced relationship, then I withdraw the bit about rape.

In the past, cats were revered as gods.
They have not forgotten this.

If you want unconditional love then get a fawning girlfriend or buy a puppy. If however you're seeking something altogether more exciting then take a trip with that wild lover or live in hope that a cat deigns to adopt you.
For some unknown reason I very occasionally get a thumb on LuLa that won't enlarge, regardless of browser, usually on an image that I'm keen to view. Sod's Law.
Going by the thumb it is a fine image.

The only down side of keeping our alsabrador was that when we both had to go away on trips, she had to be put into kennels for several weeks. Expensive, and she hated it: when she was released again she'd sulk for a week before turning back into her usual, amiable self. She understood what was going down the minute the suitcases were pulled out.
Miss her a lot. Miss them both a lot. It sucks.
