I use Amazon a lot. Several years a customer. Got the Prime, use the video and e-books, and buy stuff. And now I have a new puppy. Over the past 4 weeks I bought a bunch of puppy stuff. Collars, harnesses, leashes, toys, and treats. That should make me a marked man.
But today my Amazon home page wants to sell me shoes, watches, jewelry, air purifiers, "Styles for Her", Milwaukee tools, catnip, and a litter box. My Prime "Movies we think you'll like" has 35 suggestions. Only 1 of them looked interesting to me. Many were romantic comedies, which I strongly avoid.
My Prime Reading "Recommended for you" has 48 suggestions. Eighteen of those are the ancient classics, of the rest I found zero of interest. A lot of over-the-top SciFi and post apocalyptic stuff by unknown authors.
So, my question is, "Where is the Artificial Intelligence?" Why is Amazon so far off the mark when they have extensive history of my buying, reading, and viewing habits? Most amazing is why are they trying to sell me cat stuff when it's clear I'm a dog guy? The bonehead running the register at my local Petco store isin't even that stupid.
Could it be that they are only trying to sell me the stuff they need to sell, instead of stuff I want to buy?
-
Yes, the priority is to push out the stuff they need to sell. Preferably the items listed and fulfilled by Amazon. And their AI designers are not the brightest flashes in the cloud.
But Amazon is persistent. One day they might get it right.
-
Even better if they know so little about anyone that they leave them alone until they, the buyers, want to make contact.

It may be a mistake to assume that a commercial enterprise has your best interests at heart.

They may not have your best interests at heart, Robert, but one interest they have at heart is that if you buy something from them you’ll be satisfied enough to come back and buy something else. It’s called basic economics and it seems nowadays few if any understand it.
-
I'm surprised at how accurately targeted my Amazon ads are.
eBay, on the other hand, seem to want to sell me some bimbo's butt exercise videos.
;-)

Since you have a new puppy, check out chewy.com. How's that for targeted, intelligent advertising?

Please spare us the Intro to Econ lectures.

Why don't you get your dog an email address and give it to Amazon and let them bother him for a while?

More basically, where is intelligence, artificial or otherwise, when you need it.

My other 13 year old dog has several e-mail addresses and accounts on various websites. She is my main privacy alias. Her username is "Molly Fourlegs." She keeps getting ads to buy new cars and luxury cruises.

Than stop saying things about economics that are far afield from the facts.

A real old sea dog.

A deep dog growl would be an effective way to stop those pesky scam phone calls. I used to have a Bouvier des Flandres and he could produce the most impressive rumble.

What? Who was talking about economics? I made a smart-ass comment about corporate stupidity.
And, strictly speaking, the topic was more marketing and sales than economics.

That's a great idea. Back in the late 1970s or early 1980s, I got a store credit card for my friend's dog. I supplied the dog's name with no surname. I never used it to buy anything because I had supplied my actual street address, which was the only way to get it mailed to me. I shredded the card when I received it.
Friends of mine currently have a Facebook page for their dog. I don't know if it has any "friends".

You can see it in the way some people dress their dogs.

As for those who allow a dog to lick their face: as dogs lick their own ass, would the same people lick their dog's ass?
Seems it's women who are most obsessed with this peculiar habit. And then they smile and giggle.

Millions of women and kids. Cultivating this habit for many years, they must have developed immunity from dog-ass bacteria.

Rob,
Have you never heard the old joke?
Why do dogs lick their b*lls?
Because they can.
(I apologize.)
