Title: A gloomy day

I don't mind them, but I'm thinking the composition is not as strong as I would like.

I believe your intended sense of gloom would still come through because of the apparent absence of sunlight.

Yes, the second one I played with the contrast a bit more and it seemed to lift it.

I might play around with the local contrast some more and see where it takes me.

That's what I had in mind, yes. But be careful: it's terribly easy to overcook skies, as I have found to my cost on more than one occasion.

Will try a few subtle changes. It is easy to go too far sometimes.

I was going to suggest two flashes of lightning (and maybe a mermaid) but I think I won't. :-\
