It has grown to a category 5 strength, so it will hit hard where it makes landfall and also produce lots of precipitation.
EDIT Apparently, it just made landfall as a category 5 hurricane in the Bahama's. I wish them well.

Yes absolutely. It sounds terrifying. I hope it veers off before hitting Florida. Sad for the people on the islands that are going to be in the thick of it.

It stopped moving which is amazing. Stalled. There's no forward movement over the Bahamas which I've never heard of happening before. Those poor people are drowning. Good luck to those in Florida. My friends and relative live in Lake Worth which is currently directly west of the storm. I spoke to them. They didn't evacuate. Fortunately they're pretty much inland and live in hurricane resistant homes unlike most of those in the Bahamas. The predictors better be right that the storm will swing north before making landfall. Slobo and Russ: where are you guys?

I am in Hollywood, which is 20 miles north of Miami, 8 miles south of Fort Lauderdale, and 2 miles west of the ocean. All quiet for the time being.

The fact that it stalled actually sounds like good information for Florida if not the Bahamas. Something's pushing on it to stop going west. Maybe that means it's about to swing north and maybe even northeast into the empty ocean away from land.

The storm as seen from the International Space Station during a flyby earlier today (attached). The original high-resolution NASA image (https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/hurricane-dorian-seen-from-aboard-the-space-station) was made by astronaut Christina Koch—according to the metadata with a Nikon D5 and a 16mm lens. I find the angle somewhat disorienting, but I think that landmass below the cyclone in this frame may be Grand Bahama Island. Maybe someone who is less spatially-challenged (spacially-challenged?) than I am will be able to confirm or refute this.

Hi Alan, I'm in Leesburg, a bit northwest of Orlando. If the projected storm track turns out to be correct, we'll get some pretty high winds, but escape the worst of the storm. Only problem is that the thing is weakening, and as it weakens it spreads out, so with its spreading we're liable to get even more wind and rain. The other problem is that there's a high pressure cell in the Atlantic that, hopefully, will move south and squeeze the storm so that it goes north in the ocean instead of making landfall. At some point farther north it'll catch the jet stream that should help move it out into the ocean again. All of this is guessing -- just like the guessing the global warming people are doing. Only difference is that the weather bureau admits they're guessing. We'll find out over the next two days or so how accurate the guesses are.

Well, those first pictures and videos from devastated Bahamas are quite shocking. The news describe the storm as worst ever in Bahamas and as strongest ever over Atlantic.

The Bahamas are so flat they flood easely with a storm surge. The good thing is the houses are strong and are anchored on limestone.
The images are truly horrible to look at... some parts also got 89cm of rain....

I'm not so sure about the housing situation. Earlier reports mentioned something lik 45% of homes being severely damaged or destroyed. But such early information is understandably not that reliable.

This video of Abaco show a pretty bad picture of the destruction. The cars often seem like they held up the best. I wonder if people would be better off staying in their cars for protection during the storms although high water could cause drowning situations?

Well, they might get driven into the ocean.
Boats, on the other hand, get driven onto the land. Better be rich like Trump, and get onto your jet and fly somewhere else. Maybe for a few games of golf until things settle down? (Hell if you are he, your country would pay to fly you somewhere else.)
Rich solves everything, often even health. Certainly saves you from political reality that only affects the rest of us, the drones.
