I almost wonder if you need the sky as it doesn't seem to in any way work with the movement of the water or serve to anchor the post.

The reason for the initial version was to use the distant shore on the right upper to provide some balance to the log.

I like it much better cropped...but then that's just my humble opinion as it is always the POV of the shooter which counts the most.
