Title: Health - How to improve your brain and stay younger
Post by: LesPalenik on July 27, 2019, 11:52:09 pm
An interesting and potentially life-saving / life extending movie. 45 minutes long British program, aired on CBC. Showing state-of-the-art various testing methods and impressively presented test results.
The main benefit of this film is the evidence that it is possible to stop and reverse the premature body aging. Unfortunately, this program is viewable only in Canada.

https://gem.cbc.ca/media/media/the-passionate-eye/episode-3/38e815a-011455e56da

SUMMARY:
Using the latest science, volunteers embark on an anti-aging program. Will they be able to slow down the aging process in just three months? In How to Stay Younger, journalist Angela Rippon and Dr. Chris van Tulleken team up with scientists to show how lifestyle changes can potentially turn back our biological clock.

57-year-old Kamini Sohdi admits to being sedentary and unmotivated to exercise. She discovers how building muscle will not only make her stronger but also protect her against illness. The test results before the 3-month exercise program show that her body age is 78 years. After 3 months she lowered it by 12 years to 66 years.

51-year-old Tim Belton learns that his poor diet has been stopping him producing hormones vital to aging well. His physical age is measured as 90. After the change of diet and an exercise 3 month program, he lowered his body age by 15 years to 75 years. Not counting other improvements.

And 50-year-old Alison Richards finds out a surprising way to tackle memory loss and make her brain younger.

Thank you Martin for letting me know. I updated the original post with that remark.
I found a link with that journalist and the scientist for the original BBC program which I can't play in Canada, but you might be able to view it in UK.

One way to confirm your theory would be to conduct a study in which the participants would:
- read LuLa technical forums
- read B&H newsletters
- read Ken Rockwell posts
- get actively involved on Lula Coffee Corner group

The study should be at least one year long and would be judged by taking pictures of isolated tomatoes before and after the experiment.
Lens Baby and Gradual Density filters wouldn't be permitted during the entire length of the study. Tomatoes can range in size from the cherry variety to beefstakes.

It's been known for many decades that health and longevity are largely dependent on a wholesome diet and regular exercise.

The problem is, educating people from childhood onwards what constitutes a healthy and wholesome diet. There is endless controversy about this, which is influenced by the producers of processed foods and the producers of expensive weight-loss diets.

For many years, saturated fats were demonised, similar to the demonisation of CO2, but it is now claimed by many authorities that saturated fats are beneficial, provided one doesn't eat them to excess.

I enjoy full cream milk, pure butter, virgin coconut oil, and grass-fed beef. No health problems so far, at the age of nearly 77.

I eat plenty of vegetables and whole  fruit. I avoid pure fruit juice because it contains high quantities of fructose which is claimed to interfere with the body's natural sensation of satiety, contributing to the high incidence of obesity in Western societies because most processed food contains added sugar in the form of fructose.

I've always preferred whole meal bread and whole grain brown rice, because they contain more minerals, vitamins and fibre than the highly processed white product.

I'm amazed that despite the sound scientific evidence that whole grain brown rice is more nutritious than white rice, it's almost impossible to find a restaurant that offers brown rice on its menu. In my lifetime so far, I've discovered just 2 restaurants that have brown rice on their menu. One was in Pokhara, Nepal, and the other I came across recently in a hotel restaurant in Bangkok.

come visit Houston. i have only seen a lack of brown rice in very traditional asian restaurants or inexpensive "american" food places.
Last time i was in Thailand, 2011, i was able to find brown rice, but only at higher end places catering to westerners. Nothing in Rayong though.

Much delends on genetic mindsets.

My mother claimed to be, spiritually speaking, around thirty in her 80s.

I claim never to have grown up at all. I'm content with that as it frees me from much otherwise obligatory behavioural bullshit.

All works well until those effing mirrors creep up and jump out in front of me. Once, I was quite fond of them.

My 77 year old mom just visited us for a few days from the midwest and she is a good example of staying fit keeping you healthy as you age. She hiked with us young 48 year olds as well as my teenage son at high elevation and even did a few 4-5 Mile runs here.
She also eats a primarily plant-based diet which I think seems to help keep the spring in her step too.
I hope I can still be that spry when I'm 77.

Matt, that's quite motivating to hear about a 77 year old lady who can handle 4-5 miles hikes at high elevations. And being on plant-based diet, most probably she doesn't have to carry any pill bottles on her trips.

And speaking of pills and drugs, have you read the latest story that some insulin drugs in USA are sold for ten times the price in Canada?

There will soon be no obesity amongst the expat Brit population in Europe.

With the pound now buying you only 1.10 euros - and set to dive even deeper, food will have to compete with electricity, water, community contributions and town charges for sewerage, waste collection etc. Slim's the new order. Which will do a lot of good for the fat. Quite what it'll do for the already skinny is unknown.

Photography should be good for the mind, or it would have been before the push-button days. Now, it's possible that frustration and boredom from it may outweigh any benefits.

I wonder if studies exist comparing the environmental harm balance between analogue and digital. It's easy to point at chemicals, but what the production costs to keeping all these files stored somewhere, transmitted over cellphones into websites and so forth. How much do we waste charging batteries in order to make these often useless pictures, on working on them, discussing them online...

My parents are also 82 years old, but watching them taking care of each other to get their vitamins in time, to drink as much water for hydration, to eat healthy it's a miracle to watch them and I asked my mother what is her secret and she told me about Modern and effective weight loss program. She knows I would need her advice when I will turn her age. The reason why I share with you my dear ones is because there are many elderly parents and we their children want to have them alive and healthy for as long as possible.I was really surprised when I opened the program because I understood that age doesn't matter when you start this program because that can prolong your life.

It's amazing what a simple walk or run or hike everyday does to your health and the need for all those therapists go away. There is so much one can do in their own backyard or park that eliminates the need for a gym.

I've been walking my dog twice a day and riding my bike nearly everyday, depending on weather and have no problem staying in shape.

How many creme applications per day?
Ray Kurzweil takes about 100 vitamins and other supplement pills per day. That's down from 250 pills he used to take when he embarked first on his rejuvenation journey.

There's a great deal of uncertainty about the nutritional value of certain foods, herbs and vitamin/mineral supplements, because the bioavailability of such vitamins and minerals is not fully understood and depends on so many variable factors which are difficult to include in tests of humans groups.

For example, raw nuts and seeds, such as Brazil nuts, Almonds, Chia seeds, wholegrain rice, and so on, are considered to be very high in many important nutrients, such as Iron, Manganese, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, various vitamins, and so on.

However, what is not so often mentioned is that such raw nuts and seeds contain 'anti-nutrients', which can significantly reduce the bioavailability of such nutrients.

The anti-nutrients are described as 'Phytates' or 'Phytic Acid'. Their role is to preserve the nutrients in the seeds for as long as possible, so that when the conditions are right for the seeds to germinate and sprout, the seeds still have all the nutrients they needs in order to grow and flourish.

As the seeds sprout, the Phytates are reduced and the nutrients are released. However, if we eat the nuts and seeds before they sprout, as we often do, the Phytates, which bind the nutrients, will prevent the digestive system from absorbing and processing the nutrients.

Even more alarming, is the research which suggests if you eat the nuts as part of your main meal, the Phytates and Phytic Acid might also reduce the bioavailability of the nutrients in the main meal, so one often comes across advice to snack on nuts between meals, in order to reduce this effect.

Years ago on the Radio-Canada TV science program Découverte, they interviewed a guy who was taking desperate measures to lengthen his life. Based on a study of mice (or maybe rats) that found that mice on a reduced calorie diet, near starvation, lived longer. They had reduced the mice caloric intake to 1/3 normal and they lived some significant number of days/weeks longer than they would have otherwise but I can't remember exactly how much longer. I have no idea if this work was ever replicated. And I also don't know if the findings were ever tested in other ways. That is, was it simply the calorie reduction that lengthened life or other contributing factors of laboratory life. What I'm getting at, one study is thin evidence on which to base long-term lifestyle decisions.

But, what this guy did was to reduce his caloric intake to 1/3 what is normal for a male of his age and weight. He looked to be in his early 40s at the time of the interview and thin, obviously. He had convinced himself that by doing this he would live longer. The interview took place in his heated home, but he wore thermal underwear under his clothing along with a heavy-ish sweater but was still constantly cold. He was always hungry, and his voice was very weak-sounding, during this one interview anyway. I don't know what his life expectancy would have normally been, but let's assume that he delayed dying by 5 years, so that instead of kicking off at 90, he postponed the inevitable to 95. Is it really worth living the life of a 12th century prison inmate for 60 years just to add 5 more miserable years to your stay on earth? It's a personal decision of course, but imagine how he'd feel if 10 years later, someone else did a similar mouse study but could not replicate the findings.

Everything with moderation!

Obviously, reducing your diet to 1/3 of normal consumption is extreme. Beside the mentioned discomforts, the body may suffer more than without any calorie restrictions and any life lengthening under such circumstances is doubtful. However, according to several studies, calorie restriction is a significant factor of longevity in multiple species. Conversely, obesity reduces the long life expectations. Most published studies were done on mice and rats, but some also on humans. Surprisingly, caloric restriction can also increase energy efficiency.

Quote
The science behind caloric restriction goes all the way back to 1930 when Cornell scientist Clive McKay unexpectedly discovered that rats on a calorie restricted diet experienced more health benefits than rats eating their normal intake of food. Since then, the scientific community has expanded its investigation. Researchers have found that this type of diet significantly impacts the biology of yeast, worms, flies, and mice.

In a recent study, 12 healthy male athletes restricted their caloric intake by 33%. Among the findings was greater energy efficiency. This is largely due to the positive affect caloric restriction has on mitochondrial activity. Caloric restriction, according to the study, induces mitochondrial biogenesis and bioenergetic efficiency, reduces mitochondrial oxygen consumption and increases membrane potential, and generates less reactive oxygen species, all being able to maintain their critical ATP production.

https://www.lifevantage.com/us-en/blog/when-less-is-more-the-health-benefits-of-caloric-restriction

Quote
The new Lancet study, called the Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE) trial, is the first to test the effect of calorie restriction on cardiometabolic risk factors in healthy young and middle-aged men and women. (Cardiometabolic risk factors contribute to a person’s chances of developing heart disease and metabolic disorders such as Type 2 diabetes). Blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood triglycerides (fats), inflammatory markers, blood glucose and insulin sensitivity (that is, how well the body uses insulin to clear blood sugar) were among the cardiometabolic risk factors evaluated.

Over two years, the calorie-restriction group didn’t reach the 25-per-cent goal but did cut calories by 12 per cent, or 279 calories a day, the amount in 1.5 cups of white rice, a large bagel or 36 potato chips. The group also sustained an average weight loss of 16 pounds. (Calorie intake and body weight didn’t change in the control group.)

Calorie restriction also caused a significant reduction in all cardiometabolic risk factors, even though these values were normal to begin with. Participants who ate their usual diet did not experience any improvements. The improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, inflammatory markers and insulin sensitivity were over and above what would be expected from weight loss alone, hinting that calorie restriction itself plays a role.

Les,
Obviously, reducing your diet to 1/3 of normal consumption is not extreme, if you are an obese person. It is the diet of an obese person that is extreme.

Putting on weight by eating too much is a normal and healthy process which has helped our ancestors survive throughout the many famines of the past. Some people are unable to put on weight when they eat too much, and such people would have been at a survival disadvantage in the past when food was not always abundantly available.

The general concept behind the benefits of fasting is that it gives the body more time to naturally fix any emerging health problems because the body is free from the continual chores of digesting food.

This makes sense to me. Consider the following analogy. One is an expert at house renovation, but in order to earn a living one has to work 7 days a week doing another job, and one has no time to fix the house problems. You realize if the house problems are not fixed, they will become worse, so you negotiate with your employer to take a few days off now and again, so you have the time to fix the house problems. As a result, your house maintains its strength and durability.  ;)

Unfortunately, the initial discomfort of abstaining from the pleasures of eating and snacking for a day or two, is too great for most people to tolerate. However, if they were to persevere, they would realize that the body eventually adjusts to a change in eating habits and that it's possible to fast without experiencing uncomfortable pangs of hunger.
