Is it? Just kidding. As  a thumbnail I thought I was looking at the tail of a bird sticking out of it nesting hole. Yes the bands of bark make the three holes cohere beautifully. And it's not a troll ;)

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to comment. I was pretty happy with the way it came out, especially considering it was taken with an iPhone.

Dagnabbit, another reason I've got to start learning how to use my new iPhone (my first phone that is smarter than I am).   :(

Yeah its one big advantage is that it's nearly always with me these days. And with Lightroom Mobile on it, it even has zebra stripes to warn of blown highlights so exposure can be adjusted when making the snap. It's the only way I would have gotten this image. I walked out of a conference into an adjacent natural area during a break, and came across this really interesting juniper tree. Totally unplanned.
