The Mississippi delta region has been sinking for some time now. Apparently there are two main factors: (1) because of upstream flood control projects far less silt is being deposited to build the delta up (2) subsidence of the area, attributed to the pumping of submarine oil.

Thank you for explaining marsh loss. I would only add that the oil company canals that allow salt water to burn the grasses is another main principal factor.
To make an account of this world disappearing one acre every hour, I'll keep going there with my camera.

A lot seems to be happening in the alluvial fan as the river goes into the Gulf. Fertilizer run off from farms all the way up river has created a "dead zone" in the offshore ocean.

Yes.
And similar to the anaerobic conditions of the Chesapeake Bay.
To quote Wendell Berry, "Do unto others downstream from you as you would have those upstream do unto you".

The water temperature, exchange and flow charts, and data provide the almost and exact mirror image of the painting in motion before our very eyes, not in centuries, but months of the year.
