Because people are animals. What else could they be? Or am I now straying into a political or religious debate.

Maybe not to a National Park where you know the toilets are closed.
-
Just hook up your Motorman's Friend of Stadium Pal and take off into the park.

Go before you leave home or hotel? Routine is golden. It's what Kellogs were invented to solve.

Sure, but not everyone can hold it. People make plans for vacation and travel. What are they suppose to do, cancel them because the government decided not to fund itself at the last minute? Some parks are apparently handling the issue better than others. When its over, they'll just have to clean up the mess.

If it means having to deficate in the woods, I think cancelling your vacation plans would be a reasonable option.

If I spent $8000 on air fares, hotels, rental car reservations, I'm not going to cancel my plans. Who would? In any case, how do you know that there are no facilities? The article says that depending on the park, conditions are better or worse. Until you get there, you don't know what the actual and current situation is.

Someone who didn't want to spend his vacation defecating in the woods?
-
What’s wrong with it? Back to the nature, people! It is much better to do it in the woods, fresh air, birds chirping, sunlight streaming through the canopy, than on the streets of San Francisco 😉
-
You think the bears and wolves care about the government shutdown?

No problem, Fab. What you do is put your feet against the base of a small tree, grab hold of the tree, and lean back. Everything comes out all right in the end. Just be careful which leaves you wipe with.

You buy a small digging implement, dig a hole and then fill it in afterwards, if safe burn the toilet paper otherwise bury.

Yosemite is certainly getting trashed with toilet paper everywhere- sad. Also there is no resource protection. You want to drive your big truck in the meadows go ahead. So much for the Merced River's wild and scenic status.

With a small shovel or garden trowel, dig a hole at least 200 feet away (or around 70 adult paces) away from water, trails and campsites. Dig the hole six to eight inches deep and four to six inches wide. Once you’ve finished your business, cover the hole with soil, leaves and sticks so animals don’t get in there.

That assumes that there ARE woods. What about places where there are none? (and they are many)

In 1971 my wife and I signed up for a Sierra Club "High Light" trip, two weeks in the upper elevations of Sequoia and Kings Canyons National Parks. Most of the time we were well above tree line (highest point: 13,200 feet), with duffel carried by mules, about 60 people all together including staff.
At every camp site the leaders instructed volunteers on building two shielded privies, one for men and one for women. When we moved on, the privies and all other evidence of our camping were buried and cleaned well enough so that nobody could tell that a group had camped there. The staff provided excellent education on the environment and how to leave no visible trace.
I believe that was the last year the Sierra Club trips were so large. The main reason they went to smaller groups was that it was a bit intimidating for a lone hiker to encounter an army of 60 or so.
But even where there are no trees, it is possible to do your business without leaving a smelly mess.

Some people in this thread (and many people in national parks) are unaware of wilderness camping practice—slightly surprising in a site that was once focused on landscape photography before the “street people” took over. Yes, it involves a little shovel, and with groups, digging a communal trench that is then incrementally used and covered. BTW, I instead planned ahead, but that it not so easy with children!
Given the resources that I saw (during my non-cancelled vacation) that are being put into police guards at some national park and national monument entrances, perhaps portable toilets could be deployed there too.

Very true...leaf choice is paramount here.

Never burn paper in the open.
Stolen from my schooldays:
In days of old when knights were bold
And bogses weren't invented
They dug a hole and laid a mole
And departed quite contented.

American version...late 50's or so.
In days of old when Knights were bold
and trash cans weren't invented
They laid their load along the road
and road away contented....
A classic.

Many years ago on an Outward Bound For Tired Businessmen week in Scotland we were told in no uncertain terms to use moss!
Best wishes,

Is there no romance in your soul? You should be recommending those solutions!

There may be a sizeable group of people who don't care that National Parks are treated this way. To them they are just another place where they can go make a mess and not have to clean up after themselves because no one can stop them, so they may not see the government shutdown as a problem but rather see it as an opportunity. There are lots of people who would be happy to cover the east face of the Rockies with billboards advertising porn sites if they can make a buck at it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on this aspect of outdoor photography technique.

Only to be expected, Bill: this is a home for caring people.

Not to forget dodging (prickly plants) and burning (any flammable evidence).

More like a long-term care home ;)

Many areas of Yosemite have now been closed due to poop, trash, and limited resource protection. It has been a real zoo.
Forget using TP, use snow or ice instead. Much cleaner. :D

As in “icicles”? Boy, we are straying into a dangerous zone, rated “R” ;D
