Title: Fuji GFX f/5.6 100-200mm Zoomt release 1st Quarter 2019
Post by: Fotophil on December 19, 2018, 04:28:53 pm
Fuji Rumors says that the new f/5.6 100-200mm Zoom for the GFX will be released during the first Quarter of 2019. I wonder what the filter size might be (82mm?) and what the price might be ($2500?). Any other guesses? Here is the link:

I will be first in line. Can't wait. I got the 250mm f/4 when I got the GFX system, and it's a very fine lens, but as I use the system primarily for portraits and landscapes, the 250 isn't much use to me. (Great lens, though.)

I much prefer zoom lenses for landscape photography. This will let me carry the two zooms and the 23mm. Excellent. :)

Same here I got all lenses and quite enjoy them. I think the 100-200 will be an amazing travel lens. In combination with the 50-100 coming later it will be Perfect for me. I would just add the 23 and be set for all traveling destinations.

I would be surprised if the filter size would be 82mm, I think it will be much smaller. The front lens element has roughly a diameter of only 200/5.6= 36mm. Quality wise Fuji would make it a bit larger, not using the extreme edges of the glass.

Keep in mind that this is not a fast lens at all and I don’t understand Fuji’s decision not to make an f/4 lens here.

My guess it would be max. 72mm filter size.

Jaap

It’s pretty simple. It would be huge and very expensive. I don’t think we will ever see large aperture zooms.

No, it’s not that simple. Take an average canikon 70-200 mm f/2.8 zoom for a 24x36mm sensor. Fuji’s MF sensor is larger but not that much larger, justifying a 2 stops difference. Hence my remark.

This f/5.6 zoom looks like a kit lens to me. I know, it isn’t.

Jaap.

It'll be much smaller and lighter at f/5.6, which matches what I need in this lens. I'll use it 99% of the time locked down on a tripod at f/11 or so.

Filter size is 67 mm as can be seen on the images of the lens.

Indeed, odds are that the Canon 70-200 f2.8 pretty much cover the Fuji 33x44 mm sensor already.

It would be interesting if someone with the lens could try, in particular the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 E FL. Those who own the lens will know why.

Cheers,
Bernard

Coves it almost isn’t enough. Not even talking about the horrible edge performance. I’m for one am so happy we are not getting lenses which are getting bigger and heavier like it’s happening in the FF mirrorless market...

Having tried many adapted lenses on the GFX, there's a big difference between "covers the 44x33 sensor" and getting good corner performance from those lenses.  Indeed there are a number of lenses that cover the 44x33 sensor or get very close to it but in almost all cases, except tilt/shift lenses, the corner performance of those lenses that do cover the sensor in the corners is abysmal.  In some cases the Venus Optics Laowa Magic Format converters can give those lenses better performance in the corners but there is a 1.4x teleconverter like effect to the focal length of the lens.  Of course the 0.8 crop factor of the GFX buys almost all of that back (from a 35mm system perspective) leaving you with a lens with a somewhat similar field of view on the GFX's 44x33 sensor as it does on a 36x24 sensor but without AF or EXIF data.  As an example of this, I use an Irix 11mm lens on my GFX-50S with the magic format converter.  I do use an LCC profile in the RAW processing flow to deal with some slight color shift and corner light falloff.  This leaves me with a 35mm effective field of view of 11*1.4*0.8=12.3mm.

So if your photography is the type where corner sharpness is not critical then by all means a straight adapted 35mm lens that covers the whole sensor is an option.  But if your photography needs good corner performance then there are very few 35mm system lenses that hold up under scrutiny in the corners, that even includes some high end lenses like the Otus lenses or the 70-200 f/2.8L lenses that were suggested as an alternative earlier in the thread.

I don't know why this comes as a surprise. The lenses are designed to cover 24x36, and the performance at the edges is always worse than the center. Outside 24x36 is worse still.

It isn't a surprise to me at all but there are many, especially in various Fuji GFX forums, that advocate just getting a Canon 70-200 lens and putting it on there and suggesting that it would be just as good...  That's what prompted my response!

About the best you can say is that it will work. You can correct the vignetting in post, but not the loss of resolution. I am all for using the right tools for the job, but a lot of people like to tinker; hence the Chinese adapter industry.

Of course if you need something wider than 23mm, adapting or using the format converter is your only option currently.  There is a Laowa 17mm f/4 coming though.

Same here! Can't wait for the 100-200 to be released! And the 45-100! And the (rumored) 20-40! I will just take those three to the field.

I find adapted Mamiya 645 lenses to be no problem with overall sharpness as well as corner sharpness since they were built as medium format manual focus lenses. Their prices are very low right now.

My 300/5.6 has a 67mm filter size as does my 210/4.0 lens. They both weigh about the same at about 27 oz. with the 300 being about 1" longer. They both have slide out lens hoods which helps make them more compact, but to me it is their 2.5" diameters that makes them feel small when shooting with them.

The 645 f4.0 Fisheye is terrific with a 180 degree FOV and sports some built-in filters like the older Leica R WA lenses. The 500/5.6 is long with a huge 105mm filter size and slide out lens hood and easily fits in a 1510 Pelcian case with room left over for my Fotodiox GFX-645 adapter.

It appears to be a really fine lens, but I wouldn't classify anything written by someone who describes himself as a "Fuji X-Shooter" as a "review." They are paid hypesters who write paeans.

True, at least they were up front about it :)
So far nobody that does not have official ties to Fuji have had it in their hands.  Based on all the other GFX lenses, personally I'm not too worried though, Fuji has an outstanding track record when it comes to lenses.

What focal lengths have you experimented with? I have read the rule of thumb that at focal lengths well beyond the format diagonal (55mm in this case) there is not much difference in design for different formats, because the lenses naturally produce an image circle of diameter about 2/3 of focal length or more, and in a smaller circle of diameter up to about 1/2 the focal length, the IQ does not fall of much from center performance. The MTF curves I have seen for longer lenses tend to support this; fairly flat from center to corner. At least, a lot flatter than for normal and wide lenses.

Now that Fuji has officially announced their new 100-200mm Zoom Lens, it is refreshing that Fuji, unlike the Hasselblad and their X1D lenses, choose to keep the price at a reasonable level. I look forward to the next Fuji 50-100mm Zoom and hope it will priced accordingly.
