Title: 70th anniversary of Citroen 2CV / Ugly Duckling
Post by: LesPalenik on October 07, 2018, 12:46:32 pm
The original Citroen 2CV with 2 cylinders, producing 9 PS and top speed of 70 km/h was introduced 70 years ago in October 1948. I have fond memories as I was a proud owner of a red 2CV for several years in early seventies and drove it through a good part of Free Europe - from Venice and Saint Tropez through Swiss Alps all the way to Norway and Finland north of Arctic Circle. Have to add that my model was Autobahn-capable, it had already 16PS and 100 km/h top speed. My travel camera at that time was a 35mm Minolta SRT101.

Quote
Four wheels, nine horsepower, a maximum of 70 km / h - and a thousand adventures: nothing less than an automobile revolution, the French manufacturer Citroën on 7 October 1948 at the Paris Motor Show before the astonished public. And certainly not because her new model 2CV would have been more refined, stronger or faster than the competition. But because it was so Spartan.

The basic specification for the design was: "A car that provides space for two farmers in boots and one hundred kilos bag of potatoes , drives at least 60 kilometers per hour and consumes only three liters per 100 kilometers." The result was a tin box on wheels with roll-up roof and the cornering behavior of a drunken dromedary. But she was cheap - and economical. That was enough.

In my case, I'm closer to a case of deux cheveux.

Well said, Rob.
And I'm getting even closer to un cheveu.   :(

It's all relative - deux cheveux sur la tête est relativement peu, mais deux cheveux dans une soupe est relativement beaucoup.

Is that another way of saying it's "horses for courses?"   ;)

Do you mean the horses in the De Chevaux engine? They were definitely not built for the race courses or Swiss mountain passes.
Driving up through those mountains, my little red Duck was always the first of a long queue of cars lined up behind me.
