Probably something better to forget. Have you seen any recent videos of Demarchelier? He seems as able to chase skirts as do I! First, he'd need motivation and then an assistant - at least one.

I wouldn't trust any of those "reports" unless I was an eye witness. The industry is - or was until the mid-80s at which time I was out, full of so-called willing rapes. The competition is so fierce and the desire to get work so strong, for ego if not money, that people are willingly to pay any price that somebody may decide they want to extract. Pay the price? Hell, many are in it just for that ride. I have known them.

If you have experience of working all day long at very high mental pressure under a hot sun, having extended lunches to avoid direct overhead sunshine, filling the while with unusual foods and bottle after bottle of "expenses" wine, then no wonder things are easily put in motion, and as everybody knows that it takes at least two to tango, the point of view of people foreign to the business counts for very little, unless they are lawyers ready to make a killing from yet another rich cat worth suing.

If you are an active part of that business you very quickly understand if it is or is not for you. Nobody but yourself holds a gun at you ego. Truth to tell, it was one reason that I began to insist my wife come along on foreign trips: it was hard enough making good pictures without having to handle other stuff too.

The current climate of politically correct madness is just that: madness. If you don't like the club, stay the fuck away.

And the relevance of the late Princess Di beats me; just more newspaper shit designed to construct fantastical bridges in the air and an excuse to rake the ashes of a long-dead romance between an equally dead foreigner and princess. Some folks love that stuff because it fills the void of their own life.

So sad either side of the equation.

Do I understand what you are saying. The women were willing to put out anything and the photographers just went along for the "ride".

So sad either side of the equation.

A really dubious account of a sordid business,

No, you are extrapolating.

The reality is that it often changes as you age. When you are young, full of sex drive and have some photographic talent, your head is split amongst many goals. You want: to follow your art; want to be a star; you hope to make a pile of money. You want your fellow snappers envious; you want sex, drugs and rock and roll, even if your drug of choice is mundane booze. And when you find yourself in a situation where it's common currency, exciting and exactly what you wanted from life, way to go!

I wonder about your use of "sad" and "sordid".

Is it sad because some guys can get it when you can't; is it sordid because what may take you a couple of months to achieve others can get at the drop of a hat? Is there a rigid, regulation time to getting inside a pair if pants where any period more brief is wrong? Is the ideal, morally permissible elapsed time exactly how long it took somebody to bed his wife the first time? Does the correct morality reside in the lowest/highest denominator?

Is it sad for men to want women and that some try to catch them when they can? Is it wrong for some women to feel exactly the same?

There's so much more to life than facile quotations from newspapers, probably now the least dependable source of anything.

In the end, doctors meet nurses; pilots meet air stewardesses (or whatever the hell they call themselves today); photographers meet models; all of these people are where they are because of choices they made.

As for the "account" being dubious: give me your own, if you knew my business better than did I.

Bob Hope used to quip, "I still chase women, but only if it's down hill."  Anyway, I've been against preying on women long before the current "fad."  My relationships with them were always founded on mutual respect.  There have been a few accusations in my rural state against photographers in recent years, including one that was discovered to be taking videos of teenage girls as they undressed in his studio.  He got 65 years in jail.  http://www.keloland.com/news/article/other/delzer-sentenced-to-65-years  It seemed to make the public a little suspicious of photographers in general for a few years after that.

It is futile, Rob, debating arm-chair philosophers (wankers?).

That's how it normally is, isn't it?

However, the topic is about the supercharged world of top models and snappers, big bucks, fame and often irresistible temptations for both genders. None of the guys in the news is exactly unknown.

Your quoted case would appear to be about a pervert, not somebody out there with it and playing the main chance.

Different division of both sport and player.

This is why I seldom photograph people.

I've never been accused of sexual harassment by a rock, a tree, or a mountain.

You sure?

I remember you often photograph asphalt, potholes, etc. : http://live105.ca/man-caught-having-sex-with-the-ground/

Don't run for office, Eric. With the kind of "newsmedia" we now have that can change in a heartbeat.

This all reminds me of a book from way back, written by a tv comedian/writer, perhaps John Fortune, and titled something like A Mellon for pleasure which follows the exploits of a gentleman with a fixation on pretty much everything, including trees and red British postboxes. It was really rather funny at the time. It would never be published today, of course, because it would infringe the rights of melons, trees and postboxes.

No, the article was about "What women have to do to make their way in modelling"
. Obviously posters have missed the point.

Supposedly, ordinary looking high level photographers are super sexy to glamorous women.

Just thinking,

Maybe not, but acceptable enough to sleep their way to the top ;)

Slobodan, what a sexist remark. What were you thinking? No emoji would make your reply acceptable.

Ok... remove the emoji then. Reality is hard to accept for some people, apparently.

From your remarks you think that people like of Harvey Weinstein are OK. Exploit women for your sexual benefit.

Reality vs employment. Luckily I'm an ordinary looking white man with a honours degree in science! I've never had to have sex to get a job.

Reality, WTF!

I you were an ordinary looking white (or whatever) woman with a honors degree in science, you'd never have to have sex to get a job either (a job related to science, that is). Moral: get a degree, in science or otherwise, rather than dropping out of high school to pursue modeling or acting career.

Honestly, Slobodan are you saying it's OK to prey on you if you are a woman who is pursuing. a modelling or acting career?

I think the moral should be: Don't prey on women, which was premiss of the article.

Really,

My ex-wife did her postdoctoral work at one of the most prestigious research institutes in the United States. I can promise you that even at the highest levels of achievement there are men in positions of authority that will leverage the young women under their direction, and whose futures they hold in their hands.

They might try, because we are human. And not only men. There are more and more women in the position of power, and I am sure they would try to take advantage of that too. However, there are already laws on the books that address the quid-pro-quo situations. And wise women (and men) know how to handle those situations to their advantage. Nihil novi sub sole.

... I think the moral should be: Don't prey on women...

And that's how dinosaurs got extinct.

But seriously, you are oversimplifying the situation. You see it only as one sided, as evil men praying on innocent women. It takes two to tango. It is more of a chicken and egg situation: there are just as many women willing to sleep their way to the top as men willing to take advantage of it. Which one came first? You are idolizing one side and vilifying the other. Why is it that you assume that the sex was always under duress? As Rob pointed out, there is just as much sex for fun going on, with both sides willingly engaging in it.

There are currently two types of complainers: those that successfully slept their way to the top, but, once there, do not want to admit it even to themselves, and would rather shift the blame to those that helped them to get there. And second, those who tried to sleep their way to the top but failed, and now want their "money" back.
