Title: Mac image management

a couple years ago i bought my (now) 88 year old father a mac because the reviews said how simple iphoto is

i've been fighting ever since to keep him up and running - the proprietary database structure is impenatrable if anything goes wrong

is there any other solution?

What version of iPhoto? The newer ones (6+?) allow you to use the "on disk" layout - i.e. you keep the files on disk as you like them, and iPhoto references them there.

iView is good, but it might be more complex than you need.

I second ajtaylor, iPhoto 6 might be what you need. It's a considerable step forward from previous versions.

how about Elements 4?  ease of use of file management is the real issue

i've looked at the iphoto 6 reviews - although it's obviously better, i still don't like way it organizes photos and there are crash reports

I really like Photo Mechanic... it's very very fast.

No central DB to worry about or cause performance issues, etc..

It has a lot of advanced features for tagging, metadata, etc.. but on the surface the UI is very easy to use.
