Title: 2016 Japan market shares for mirrorless

Interesting stuff, in 2016 Canon was #2... one wonders what would happen if they were serious about it:)

Post by: hogloff on January 19, 2017, 08:21:21 am: A couple years ago Sony made the statement they will focus on the higher end mirrorless cameras which are more profitable than the low end...thus their unit sales would naturally decline, but their profit increase. Canon has entered the low end market which obviously sells more units, but at a lower profit. The likes of Sony, Olympus and Fuji are aiming at higher level cameras.

The new Canon EOS M5 is hardly "low end".

It barely competes with Sony's lowest end camera, the A6500. So yes...it is a low end camera IMHO.

Wouldn't Sony's lowest end mirrorless APS-C camera be the A6300 or the A6000 or the A5100 or the A5000? The A6500 is the high end Sony APS-C mirrorless.

Post by: davidgp on January 23, 2017, 02:24:36 am: I'm not surprised, EOS M was always strong in Japan, it was always said that Canon was selling lots of those units there. Also consider that the M5 arrived at the end of the year... So probably big parts of the sells are for other units. Maybe the reason can be that Japanese people like more "cheap" M cameras under 600€ than paying high end.

Anyways, this is just a country... This will me more interesting if it translates to similar trends to other countries...
