Title: Shutter acuations
Post by: Gellman on July 06, 2006, 11:41:59 pm
I am thinking about selling my Canon EOS 1D Mark II and would like to know how to get the shutter actuation count so I can provide this info to prospective buyers. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I contacted Canon support and was told it can't be done with my camera, which I don't believe for a second. Almost every time I see a a similar camera for sale, the number of shutter actuations is listed, so there's gotta be a way.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

John

P.S. Could a board administrator please correct my misspelling typo in the topic name.

You can either use Capture One (the demo version will do it and can be downloaded here (http://phaseone.com/Content/Downloads.aspx)) or use CanCount (here (http://www.soens.de/Software_EN.html)). A free version of CanCount was available but it looks like it's been discontinued. I don't know if the current version can be used as a demo or not...Download it and try.

See attached screenshot of the info panel of Capture One.

To clarify francois' statement, the total shutter actuation count is encoded in the metadata of every RAW file. CanCount and Capture One know how to read the metadata. If the buyer has a question, simply shoot a RAW frame and email it to the buyer. Then he/she can examine the RAW with whatever tool deemed appropriate.

Thanks very much to Francois and Jonathan for their helpful comments. And may God bless and protect Jonathan in Iraq.

In PS CS2 using a RAW file:

File
File Info
Advanced
Click on the + line: http://ns/adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/ (http://ns/adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/)   (this line is not available for jpg).

There will be a line that reads: ImageNumber: xxxx

Note that a some (the ones I have) exif readers can't read this deep - but I might not have the most up to date versions.  CanCount has a free demo, but the #of images isn't available on the free version.

My (somewhat ancient) recollection is that this is not in fact the # of shutter activations, but the number of files written to card to date - hence the technically correct statement from Canon.

I'm not sure how this applies to other cameras but on my 1D mark 2, Capture One increments the frame counter even if I shoot tethered. In this case, nothing is written to the memory card. FWIW, CanCount displays the same # of frames as C1.

I remember that some operations performed by Canon (ex: replacing the sensor) reset the frame counter.

That does not work for non 1 series cameras, right?

Don't know why canon has an issue with this, but doesn't even work for the 1d3.

It seems to be about right for my 1DsMKII, but not even close for the 5D. Weird.
