FYI.
It appears that Topaz Labs have released a new version of their Impression (http://www.topazlabs.com/impression) application/plugin. I happened to stumble on the new version, I had not read about it before, so it's probably a very recent upgrade. I have yet to test it, but it is said to have some 30+ more presets to choose from, and some more buttons and controls (e.g. number of brush strokes).
This type of application is certainly not everybody's cup of tea, but it can produce some nice painting/sketch results that exceed what I can achieve myself. It can occasionally transform a technically inadequate shot, to something useful (same composition but more abstract/impressionistic), and do it very fast.
They also offer a 40% discount until 7/7, so for those who need some time to try it out before deciding, some 2 weeks from now should suffice and still allow to benefit from the discount deal. Upgrades are free for owners of a prior version.

There are many new features in the new version, including integrated masking (within Impression).
