A few years ago, the artist Concetta Antico discovered that she was carrying a genetic
mutation that gave her astonishingly sensitive perception of colour – seeing a spectrum
of distinct shades where we only see one.
As she told BBC Future in 2014, even the dullest pebble on the road shimmered like a kaleidoscope.
“The little stones jump out at me with oranges, yellows, greens, blues and pinks,” she says.
“I’m kind of shocked when I realize what other people aren’t seeing.”

I think it's great that this (tetrachromacy) is finally being investigated in depth!

I should imagine that a major disadvantage is that photographs won't look right.
Photography assumes trichromatic vision, with three sets of cone receptors that behave like this:

If you have an extra set of receptors, or receptors that don't match normal colour vision, then presumably colour reproduction won't reproduce colours the way you see them.

I'm pretty sure that Ann Shelbourne, who was a regular in the old Photoshop forums, and contributes here occasionally, is a tetra. She sees blues no one else can see.

Yeah i know its not people related...but for an amazing story in color perception, do a little research in the Peacock Mantis Shrimp eyesight. They are probably hands down the most spectacular feat of color vision out there.
Just the thought of seeing colors we don't perceive is such a fascinating concept.

This topic hits home for me, as my own vision is something like 2.5-chromat, not trichromat like most of the rest of the masses. :(
That's why I do mostly B&W.
