A radio trigger would do the job.

Do a Google search on Pocket Wizards, which are one of the best radio triggers available. They are commonly used to trigger multiple remote flashes, but they can also be used to trigger a camera. Any number of receivers can be triggered by a single transmitter, so they would probably be one of your best options. I have a set I use to fire my studio strobes and they are very reliable.

I am confused. How does the Pocket Wizard handle the fact that different cameras have different sockets for the remote control cable? Do they ship several cables or what?

Yes, they sell accessory cables to fit all major camera cable release jacks.
