Title: Is it "safe" to update now?
Post by: bernhardAS on November 03, 2015, 04:10:36 am
Is it "safe" to update now?

Is the old import back?
Are the worst crash bugs fixed?

I kind of lost track.

Depends on your sensitivity to risk,
No,
Yes - the worst ones.

There hasn't been an update yet. Adobe probably want to be sure they make it right this time rather than rush out an update that would embarrass them once again.

I updated a few days ago, and Lightroom crashed the first time I used it.

The new import module is still here, still just as ugly (looks like it belongs on a phone).

I should have waited.

I seem to recall that three or four weeks ago the word from Olympus was that a fixed update would be out "next week."
No word on when "next week" will arrive, but it apparently hasn't yet.

I'm waiting until the next "update" really is out, and at least a few other brave souls have tried it and said that it works before I try it.

I have updated 3 days ago from LR 5 to LR 6 (that is, 6.2.1), it is working fine. This is on the stand alone version, not sure if it makes any difference.

It is 'not safe' yet although you're likely getting notifications like me if you're using CC. The October 2015 update listed isn't what you want if you rolled back for the older Import dialog.

I'm on 6.1.1, rolled back from 6.2.
I got the update entreaty on the non-subscription AAM notifier today also.
I do wish I could study that new Import page some more, but I got scared and rolled back before I could spend much time with it.
Why do you think it shows a grid of photos, but with the visual content of those photos grayed-out and with large X's over them, so as to make the visual content of the photos un-discernable??

I thought the apology blogged by Hogarty inferred/said Adobe would be making the revisions quickly.........how long in Adobe speak is quickly?

With Photoshop CC they once broke the merge functions, so focus stacking and panorama creation didn't work.  It was literally the next dot release version before they fixed it, which was a month or two.  Even though it was a bug and broke the functionality they did not push a fix out.

I remember him stating they would put the old functionality back, but not a timeline.  It probably isn't as easy as fixing a bug, because I'm sure this time they want to retain the current import function for those that choose to use it, with an option to use the "legacy" function for those that would prefer it.

personally I think I can do everything the old version did regarding file location and renaming etc.  except eliminating ones I don't want imported easily.  I can't understand why images you have "selected" to import are blocked out with a huge checkmark ... so you can't see them to decide not to import them.  Personally whoever thought that was a good idea probably should be looking for another job.  There is no logic to that at all.  I think I could learn to live with all the changes if they would change that and make showing a little larger previews possible.

This is my biggest gripe with Adobe, the lack of hotfixes. Consider yourself as a betatester with new official updates.

Many moons ago when I was more into video I bought Premiere Pro and it was so riven with functionality issues it became unusable and the various web fora at that time specialising in video had similar postings.........yes, I felt like an unintended beta tester, it was certainly not market ready or fit for purpose.

I switched Media Studio Pro (sorry too long ago go recall full name?) It worked 100% out of the box.  But i kept an eye on the forum progress of Premier Pro and the complaints continued for many further releases, the worst purchase decision I made at that time!

Over the more recent years I have on the whole been happy with PS and later with LR but for such a large software developer producer they do appear to still be capable of dropping the ball and misreading what impact "improvements" will have in the real world.

Don't hold your breath.  With Adobe hot fixes you need to think months, not days.  Think in geological time scales.

Thanks for the many responses.

I find it unfortunate that the quality of releases declined to a point where one can not simply upgrade when the notification recommends it.
The decrease in release quality might actually as well connected to the new subscription model.

I guess there might be far more motivation for stricter quality control around anything before you order a million CD's to be burned :-)

I would like to have an easy way for me to klick "wait for the next update".

Gee...I thought that the subscription made it easy and faster to get the latest updates?  Oh...I see...the customer doesn't want the latest updates?  Customers....they surely are fickle!

Not when the latest update is two steps back, with useful and expected functionality removed!

Hey!  Don't forget about five trillion 3 1/2 in disks too!  8)

I do remember Tom saying "within the week" (or maybe it was "end of the week").  However, 'tis a hella long week.

Having said that though, I wasn't really affected at all by the recent updates.  I was so stoked by the 6.2 much improved HDR merging that I went and redid most of them.  Due to that, it wasn't until 6.2.1 that I found out some slowness wasn't just because of me redoing a lot of HDR's at the time.

The Lightroom import panel could have used a nice redesign.  Something easier to follow for newbies, with a better visual representation of the path the files will follow.
When I saw the import panel filled with darkened thumbnails with big X's on them that made it impossible to actually discern the thumbnails, I felt a sinking feeling that I had never gotten from professionally designed software before.

I too found the darkened X really confusing! Seems like the opposite approach to take.

Nothing.  That's why I wouldn't write software afterwards.  8)

... I felt a sinking feeling that I had never gotten from professionally designed software before.

But ... the design of the new import dialog was NOT intended for 'professional' users ... it was designed for those users frustrated with the experience ... you know ... the people who have yet to invest a single penny in Lightroom software ...
