Title: Need to make Mural Size Print
Post by: Dave Gurtcheff on August 27, 2015, 03:59:01 pm: Here on Long Beach Island, NJ, they hold a "Chowder Fest" every October. All the local restaurants compete for best red and white clam chowder. It is outdoors, under giant tents. Each restaurant has their own booth, and they also compete for best decorated booth to suit a "theme" they have every year. It is a really big deal to the merchants who look for bragging rights for the following year. I was asked by a local restaurant where I exhibit my photos to help with the booth. The theme this year is "nautical", which is right down my alley, as that is my specialty in photography. The owners asked if I could make a giant mural, say 6 feet high by 8 feet wide. My Epson 7890 has a max width of 24". Have any of you used a service bureau that can make mural prints that size? Can you recommend anyone? The print will not be mounted or framed; probably just stapled up to the plywood back of the booth. I plan on using a high quality image made with my Pentax 645D, thus the 6'x8' proportions.

Post by: Jim Metzger on August 27, 2015, 06:01:03 pm: If I was doing this I would probably make (3) 2' x 8' strips with slight overlap and spray mount to lightweight MDF. You will need to make the substrate from 2 pieces with joining ribs.

For a single print there are sign printers in Long Island City Queens that can go up to 25' wide. Yes 25', the paper is loaded with a forklift.

Post by: langier on August 29, 2015, 12:41:34 am: Find a trade-show production company or a company that prints billboards. They have the grand-format printers and the special sauce to make things both large and nice quality.

Do you have any experience w/ some of the PhotoTex alternatives such as Breathing Color Art Peel (I hear they are reformulating the adhesive) or the Lexjet product (name escapes me right now)

Sorry no reason to look any further. (The Phototex does it for me.)
Mount to a 4x8 sheet of Dibond or thicker Gatorboard and you are ready to go.

It can also be sprayed for outdoor protection as well.
A very cost effective solution. An easy do it yourself project.
