Title: Capture Integration Reports: Phase One XF/IQ 3: Information & Exclusive Content
Post by: Steve Hendrix on June 02, 2015, 07:09:51 am
The worst kept secret of the past few days is now out, however, while there were some leaks, a lot of posted information missing and many presumptions are incorrect. Anthony Festa and Dave Gallagher both spent part of the past 2 weeks in Copenhagen with the Phase One development team for the XF Camera and IQ3 Digital Backs. Below is the start of what we have compiled. We expect added information to be ongoing.

Thans Gerald. The FAQ is designed to be ongoing - while we know a lot, there are sure to be questions coming up that have not been addressed.

Thanks Steve.

Will there be a firmware upgrade for the IQ1 backs which will include the Enhanced Exposure Warning?

Out of my league, but curious, does it have the capability to capture gps data?

Thanks for the post.  Great analysis.

Edit, Maybe VERY surprised to see no Credo support with XF, would imply a possible division? i.e. between Phase and Leaf?
Also surprised to see no P+ support and total disco of DF+.  This appears to be an issue of confusion as there are different answers out there.

Had high hopes for the new 35mm LS, but appears to be a similar move to the 28mm.  Same number of groups and elements as the older 35mm.  Was sure hoping for a totally new design here.

No real details on the new 80MP with long exposure, i.e. is there a new chip (like was supposed be on the IQ260?) Were they able to get 1 hour with the current 80MP chip does with only new firmware and controller?  If so,, really wonder about the initial hype around all the design of the 260 (2 years ago which supposedly had a new chip over the 160)

Live View for CCD, states improvement here, up to 3fps.  It will be interesting to see if this is an improvement over current backs.  Phase states it's good enough to use in the field on a tripod in the "right light conditions", which implies to me maybe still blooming issues?  still need for vario ND?

Would love to see more info on AF on XF, so far only mention is a center focus point, with a moveable square to adjust for closest focus point.

Like the idea of the "hyperlocal" AF option.  Great idea.

Paul

Seems like that part is incorrect, Paul. Here is confirmation that it will work with Credo.

I have just written to the local rep. Let's see what he says.

As has been shown, the Credo compatibility does appear to be ON. EDIT - Well, it looks like information is truly difficult, we are going to have to rely on each other, including former colleagues! This may be a true communal group effort!

For now, we'll stand by the Credo not supported - YET.

Much of the information was not concluded or in flux the past 2 weeks - even with both Anthony Festa and Dave Gallagher in Copenhagen - and new information is rolling out. So Credo is a go. I never expected that to be an issue - at worst, I expected Credo compatibility at some point, perhaps not immediately.

However, P+ incompatibility is certain at this point. Whether that changes or not in the future remains to be seen. But it is a completely different technology, and the first P/P+ digital back was launched 10 years ago, the last major update 7 years ago. So not totally unexpected.

While the 35mm may appear similar to the 28mm, keep in mind that the 28mm is a very sharp lens for the majority of the coverage. Remember my saying about the 28mm - and now it may be true (really, really good 34mm lens).

Agree about the Hyperfocal focusing - that's great.

I'm on a conference call with P1 right now - Credo will be supported. Similar compatibility to P1 IQ1 Series.

Double checking the specs from multiple sites the lowest ISO setting for Long Exposure Mode in the IQ380 will be 200, which suggests that there is a high chance that the performance will be prone to disappointment as in the IQ260 case.

Now it's most tricky for the IQ260 users:

a) upgrading to the IQ380 may still lead to Canon-level dynamic range;
b) downgrading to the IQ350 will definitely cause significant loss of money as well as problem with crop factor;
c) the faith of largest sensor with long exposure is challenged by the IQ380, so the desire and justification to keep using the IQ260 will somewhat decrease.

Hi Steve,

Can you tell us what the weight of the camera is?
And about the autofocus - is it just a center point, multi point or ???

Thanks,
Eric

Edit: Found the answers in Kevin's article.   Weight - 1390grams with 90deg finder or about 300g more than the DF+

Hi Steve,

I would love to hear about the autofocus too. Kevin's article seems to suggest that all the focus points are clustered in the center. Is it true? How big / spread is the focus area?

I was hoping that the new AF system should be big enough to beat Hass's True Focus, so that recomposition is not needed when shooting people in portrait orientation. Is it possible?

1.95 lbs/0.88 kg - XF Camera (No Prism, No DB, No lens, includes all batteries)

**IQ250 Digital Back/DF+ Camera/Built-In 90º Prism Finder/SK 80mm LS Lens

5.25 lbs/2.38 kg - IQ250/DF+ Camera/90º Prism/SK 80mm Lens (includes all batteries)

2.60 lbs/1.18 kg - XF Camera/90º Prism (No DB, No lens, includes all batteries)

Regarding the new 1000 pixel CMOS auto focus sensor, it is not yet clear to us what they can implement. Currently there are 3 shooting modes: Spot, Average, and Hyperfocal. This is a brand new auto focus that Phase One themselves are in the beginning stages of fulfilling, so - what they can do with it may be an answer that comes later.

What do you want to know?

As you can imagine, and as it always is, it's not a simple process, as there are so many variables.

But tell me where you are starting from and I'll do my best to complete the scenario.

Same question for you:

I have a few questions and perhaps somebody could help me.

I owned a P45 and then moved to a IQ160. Camera is still a AFIII.

1. So there is no upgrade option on the camera, so I have to buy that new. If I buy online the camera and keep my current back, what warranty do I have on the camera ? 1 year or 5 years ?

2. If I want to upgrade th IQ160 to the the IQ360 and buy the camera as well what do I get ? Warranty wise ? What do I get as accessories ? Case ? Backpack interior ? 2 batteries or 4 batteries? nothing ?

thanks a lot for the help!

What is the longest exposure in std mode in IQ360 1 or 2 minutes and is that ISO 50

IQ280 and 645DF+

This constitutes a crossgrade. Not ever done in the past with Phase One - they are now offering it for a limited time. However - the cost is high (there is a reason they have not offered it in the past). We have discussed the crossgrade pricing and expressed our desire for a lower price.

Generally, whether it is a crossgrade or an upgrade, the pricing scenarios and variables are many and configuring pricing is complex. Many factors come into play - there are different countries, currencies, the condition of the equipment matters, the shot counts on the equipment, we, Capture Integration may choose to buy your equipment from you rather than send it to Phase One as part of the policy, etc, etc.

With so many variables, it is best to contact your preferred dealer directly, tell them what you have, what you're interested in doing, and allow them to configure a price for you. And for any users who would prefer us, we'd be happy to do so.

And this specific scenario I generally would question, since the IQ280 will be capable of 90% of the same functionality as the IQ380/XF (discounting the longer exposure times).

But there are now 3 generations of IQ digital backs with multiple cameras, and there are many, many variables. We have a reputation for being creative in making things work and getting to the best possible pricing scenario for our clients - but this typically is best handled one on one.

Notably, if someone purchased a new IQ/DF+ in the past 60 days, they should contact their dealer for there are special accommodations for those who recently purchased ahead of the announcement.

Hi Julian -

The answer to your first question is that if you purchase the XF camera as a stand alone purchase, or also with an IQ1 Series Phase One digital back (regardless of online or via a person to person call with a human being), the warranty on the XF Camera is One Year/100,000 Shutter Actuations.

Your second question - upgrading from IQ160 to IQ360 - your warranty will be 5 Years/250,000 Shutter Actuations on the XF Camera/IQ360 (not sure if there is a shot count limit on the IQ3 Digital back itself, will check that). Contents/Accessories would include:

* C1 Pro V8
* Pelican Storm Rolling Hard Case
* F-stop Phase One Laptop Sunshade
* F-Stop Flexible Backpack Insert
* Charger for IQ3 and XF
* 3400 mAh Batteries
* 16 GB CF-Card and Reader
* Gray Cards & LCC calibraton kit
* Sensor Cleaning Kit
* FW and USB cable
* Camera Focusing screen

Standard mode can be exposed for longer than 2 minutes, however the results will degrade rapidly (but YMMV). This could be at any ISO, but the best will be the base ISO, and in the case of the IQ380 it is ISO 35 50. The advantage of the LE Mode of the IQ380 (and similarly, the IQ260) is that the quality will remain usable for far longer exposures than standard mode.
